As i have never bought new sails before i didnt really know what to expect from a qoute from a local sail makers, without going into to many details the quote was for two sails, a jib and a staysail.
They are 100 square foot each, tan, bolt rope, sacrificial strip and nothing else.
the price is 459.00 plus vat each

Is this the right sort of price ?

Have you asked a few lofts for quotes?

I suspect you'll find that the size of the sails doesn't affect the price very much (cloth and the labour of making straight seams being relatively cheap). The costs will come from the labour involved in the corners and the "extras" such as reefing points and sacrificial strips.

I would get a few quotes - Doyles - and the very cheap ones like Crusader - good at advertising - If your local is within a close call go with him cos if they don't fit he is nearby.

Doyles Barbados messed up mine when I ordered from Grenada. God bless them they air freighted them back to their loft - solved the problem - air freighted them back to me and gave me a new hh GPS in compenstation for the time I spent waiting - good company!

I have got another quote in now from dorset and its only £293.00 per sail which is a great difference to the local sailmakers £539.00

I can only assume i am paying for the "hand made locally" label in the corner of the sail

If you want terrific sails at reasonable prices, get a quote from
E-Mail: rolly@phuket.ksc.co.th
talk to Mike Tasker.. they are in Phuket, have a great reputation ( they are Aussies of course) and you would be helping out the Tsunami victims by re-establishing business in that area....

If you want a semi local company Osen Sails of Plymouth have cut me some good sails in the past. Talk to Nick the boss there, and if you explain what sort of sailing you do etc, I have always found his advice good and sound.

Prices have been very reasonable compared to all the well known makes including Crusader.

I saw some new tan sails on the floor of the loft when I went in to pay my bill the other day.

No connections except as a customer.
