When replacing sails do you always keep the same sail number? In my case the number on the old sail was issued by the Clyde Cruising Club.
Can you have any number you like?
I'd only comment that made up sail numbers would be unlikely to help a SAR team, as the numbers wouldnt appear on the register. Why not apply to the RYA for some 'legit' numbers - they do it for free for members as I recall, as do the RORC for their members.
The best thing to help a SAR team is a boat that's different from the herd, has the CG66 filled in and lodged with Coastie. The sail number will be on the CG66 form along with the description of the boat.
Try looking for: white yacht, white sails blue spray hood on a nice summers day in the solent. Sail numbers will of course help but unless they're really big, they can't be read until your close up.
Yes you keep the same sail number. Numbers issued by CYCA stay with the boat for its life.
If your sails are fairly old, they will probably just have the number, followed by a 'C'. It is now more correct to prefix it with "GBR" so 1234C becomes GBR 1234C.
is a form you fill in and lodge with the coastguard which tells them what the boat looks like, what safety gear you carry and who to contact if you're in trouble.
when you call the coastguard to tell them you're on passage they then have a chance of finding you when you don't turn up at your destination.
(incidentally they won't start a search just because you didn't report safe arrival so tell a friend what your plans are.)
