Don't you think a boat with a sail number just has a bit more panache than one without? Having moved on from a Sigma 33 and looking forward to the new Ovni 395 (you don't want to know about the waiting list and build time), I think I would like to have a sail number, but since I won't be racing just how do you get a sail number? and is there a market for cherished sail numbers like car number plates? and if not why not?

I'm really worried that there may be an inclination to treat old sail numbers like old car registration plates. Personally I dont't think it will catch on purely from the fact were dealing with numbers but I could be wrong!
I don't look at things this way and it perplex's me?

By the way mine's Y7006. Could that be worth something???

Regards.

By the way I forgot to mention that owned sail number oo1 Hunter Horizon 26. the Earls Court show boat of 1984. Now that's not a bad number is it??
Someone is going to have 007 I bet!

Its a whole lot easier for HMCG to be sure they have the right boat if there are sail numbers. Looking for a blue and white yacht in the Solent doesnt really narrow things down all that much - but a specific sail number gives them a bit more to go by!

Apart from that I reckon its all a bit meaningless other than as a class number. But somehow a boat does not seem complete without a sail number.... though I cannot for the life of me work out why!

We haven't got a sail number and I'm not going to bother with one unless I do the RTI, or something or other, for a laugh.

As I understand it racing numbers GBR/K etc. are issued by the RYA, manufacturers' sail numbers are, as has been pointed out, just the manufacturer's sequential build number for the vessel. If you ask Ovni nicely I'm sure they will stick some on for a "reasonable" fee.

If you built your own boat you could put what you wanted on it. I could put PB 001 or invent a class - the Bumstead - and put BS 1 on it.
So perhaps it translates to any boat.
Is Jeanneau going to come along and ask why you've put ' Bert 09 ' on their boat?
But why bother?
I suppose a GBR number helps identify your boat in some circumstances, but does anyone really look at sail numbers?

Only when I'm race officer and there are boats over the line ... and even then I generally recognise the boat anyway ... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My sail is devoid of numbers, letters, slogans etc. Any suggestions what I should put on it?

I had thought of my initial (W) and for a nautical flavour an anchor perhaps.

I was caught in severe gale in the Baltic in the seventies and a large ship used a spot light to see the sail number and informed us that he was passing our position on to the authorities (not sure to this day who the authorities were?). In those days we did not have an engine in this boat ( not even an outboard) and we were pleased that someone was looking out after us. I don't think it's the same nowadays. We were frequently watched/monitored by the East German warships that patrolled the border in the days of the cold war.

I used to work for Lloyd's of London. Their crest consists of a St Georges cross over a fouled anchor. From time to time a version with a rearrangement of the cross cropped up.

I'm sure I have seen Ovni's come out the factory with sail numbers, although I must admit the vast majority do not seem to have them, even though many have done the ARC.

The RYA issue the racing numbers, but apparently many cruisers also prefer to use these numbers. If you are an RYA member, you can be issued with a GBR number for free (£26 otherwise). The article and form are available at the RYA site.

The ARC issue a banner with your number to be tied to the guardrails, no need for anything on the sail, Only proper races need sail numbers. Years ago I did the OSTAR and they required you to have the number they issued on the sail, a real pain for those who already had a number.
