Sail cleaning

I had my sails cleaned by Novosail before and they did a good job. However the company has slighlty changed personnel and rules since.

Previously they quoted on square meter sail size, now they do it on weight, which is a rip off because they charge in practice to wash the damp in the sails.

Also the person I dealt with was slightly unhelpful. For that reason only I would rather go elsewhere.

Could anyone recommend a sail cleaning service SSE of London?

I used them last summer for the first time with a discount voucher they sent me as I registered by email. Yes, they weighed them then but I went at a quiet time and they showed me around and explained all the processes.

The work was excellent, made easier by the discount!

In this years Reeds marina guide there is a Novosail advert that you take with your sails (ie a voucher on page 23) for a 15% discount, this may help you to try them again.

Novosail washed my badly stained spinnaker last year, and did an excellent job. As it was priced by the weight of the sail I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap the wash was.

Washing sails

I am always amazed that people pay to have sails washed. When my sails are home I just hang them out in the garden and put the garden hose on them. This washes off salt etc. A bit of detergent and a brush usually helps with stains. The remaining stains stay. I would rather save my money to buy new sails.
Of course you need weather where the sails will dry. perhaps that is the biggest problem. Currently they would be dry in 10 minutes. olewill

I used Vanish on my sails. Came up very well but it took an overnight soak with the crystals sprinkled on with cold water. I also used Novasail last year and the result was fine but it is expensive for some tatty old sails. Maybe better on a new set. Cant afford those for a year or so...

Where do you soak them? no way mine would fit in the bath.

Perhaps a large paddling pool or something outdoors might work I suppose.
