Sail Cleaners - Solent

Have had sails laundered though sail makers several times but has anyone any experience of going direct to any sail cleaning company. If so any recommendations?

Doyles sail loft in shamrock quay, no ties with them just very happy with the work and cleaning they have done on my sails.

The only laundry I knew of that dealt direct with the public was Novo Sail who used hi-tech cleaning processes but are no longer in operation AFAIK

Many chandlers and sail lofts all over the country, including Doyle, send sails to Tip Top http://tiptopsails.co.uk/ but they do not deal direct!

I would confirm what VicS has said. Virtually all the sail makers in and around the Solent use Tip Top for cleaning, but if you want the sail checked and minor repairs attended to, they will often do this themselves.

Arthers Chandlery in Gosport offer the service at a reasonable cost (when I rang round a couple of seasons back, the prices varied incredibly), but I am fairly sure they too use Tiptop.

Sanders Sail, Lymington are goodl

Tip Top list Arthurs Chandlery as one of their "partners".

Saunders' website implies that they wash sails themselves; "We have a separate department for sail repairs and in the winter we can wash and overhaul your sails before storing them in our heated premises until the start of the new season."

i though novo were now wash and waterproof? Used them some years ago and wouldn't do so again. Nice bunch, but there washing process stained my no1. I wasn't happy and in retrospect should have kicked up a big fuss.

My understanding is most everybody else just lays them out and pressure washes them, then hangs them to dry. Is this how it's done?

There was an article in PBO or YM in the not too distant past on the different processes used by Tip Top and Novo Sail. My personal experience was that although Novo Sail was very effective, it was a bit harsh on the sails, and most sail makers did not recommend them.

The article was in PBO. It was several years ago. I remember it but I stopped buying the magazine 4 years ago.
