Hi everyone,

I saw on the news that Bob Geldolf has onganised an event for the upcoming G8 Summit that involves sailing! It looks like it could be fun.

Here's the link from the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/4612621.stm

The details are a bit sketchy at the moment, but I was wondering if any might be interested and if so, whether they need any crew? I'd like to take part if you think we could support it.

Thanks,

Duncan

HM Customs and HM Immigration services might take a dim view of this. And where would it leave your insurance? I think people need to think hard before getting involved... it's not Dunkirk!

Ageing not very good 'Rock Stars' in need of publicity? is this something that you want to get involved in? If any one wants to come over from France for this poorly thought out publicity stunt then let them get the ferry.

"All those willing people from the southern ports of Britain, really the only thing they can do is hop on their boat and get over to France,"

Yea, right!

I can see problems with commercial shipping not to mention insurance

Not me mate .. think its a daft idea proposed by an idiot full of dope and wind signifying nothing!

Seems Geldof has completely lost the plot - no idea about what's involved and latest is "a spokeswoman for Geldof says Ellen McArthur might be joining in" - yeah, right.

Re: What Planet

is Geldorf from? You sum it up with "details a bit sketchy". He seems to be throwing out bizzare ideas and leaving everybody else to pick up the pieces.

The man might be useful as a catylist but he's becoming a bit of a loose cannon lately.

Do you ever feel that if you had his dosh you could afford his principles?

Re: What Planet

If anyone is going, any chance of a ride? I'm a qualified day skip if you are interested. I think it'll be great to sail in such a potentailly large flotilla and it could be a great event.

Sorry if I'm being positive, it just looks great.

Re: What Planet

All things being equal I will be considering it weather permitting. Should be a good party lots of aging hippys. What are the Marinas like around Edinburgh.

Re: What Planet

Dont be sorry about being positive - just be sorry about contemplating it, the only thing great about this will be its potential for a .... up

How are these hoards of Johny Foreigner going to get re-patriated the following weekend after we sail them all over ?

I think it's a closet French Invasion personally.

That said, I'll do it, as long as the ones I get to bring back look like Abi Titmuss.

Agreed. I, too, think that the whole idea is crass and am glad that I don't live near Gleneagles. I'm all for aid to Africa but don't see how the chaos likely to caused by hordes of people descending on Edinburgh will help. Living in the NW, I suppose that I could volunteer to take Me Geldorf back to Ireland.

You have got this right. The concept of just cancelling debt for some of these countries is barking mad. It is so unlikely to make any difference to the lot of anybody other than the re-surgance of some aging rock stars career.

Now, if he was to try to educate people about the problems, he might be able to achieve something.

Take the example of Zimbabwe. Once the provider of food to most of africa, now a major section of the population are starving -if anyone believes that any financial aid would go anywhere other than into a numbered swiss account, they probably also believe in the toothfairy.

Take a spade and start digging

Moliere's 'Dig your own garden' is still as true today as when he wrote it.

IMHO, Charlie's Mum has the right idea - cancel everything in Edinburgh and stay well clear of anything organized by any of the Billy Liars.

Re: I take it all back

a heavily accented gentleman has just offered me £60k to bring his 6 "cousins" over during the event. I think this is a generous offer and might give a % to Live 8. So really I need you all to get behind this idea. Otherwise I'm going to look like a pea on a drum out in the channel with the cousins.

He tells me he's got lots more cousins if anybody else wants a go.

Er Ellen was on the BBC radio news saying this was a good idea and she was going to support it - although I don't think she said she was going to do it.

BBC South TV news at lunchtime reported that "Dame Ellen will lead the flottila".

Who's crazy the frog or Geldof? IMHO I know who is better looking!

I thought that maybe Bob was a Blair plant, to distract us all from the domestic issues. However if this does go ahead he may just highlight how open the UK borders really are. With far too few police/customs/immigration officers to cope with the influx.

Re: I take it all back

Now the starting rate per cousin is 3 years, and a multiplier for the 6, and a discount for an early guilty plea, why, I might only get 6 years, then with parole in 3 I could be out in 3 with the probation service waiting for me to break wind so I can be recalled on licence- - - -

Sorry Bob, this seems to be lacking any forethought, and I would not want to be on the fringe of something this disorganised, and with the attendant risks to all involved. If you think I am being silly then just consider some of the cases of lorry drivers who have found folk in their lorries, then ended up on the wrong side of the law.
