Anyone has to make a claim with Saga? Were they good? I just got quite a reasonable quote from them and wondered if I should take it up

Is your boat over fifty years old then?
Sorry, I'll get me coat!
Seriously though, it made me think about premiums.
My boat is insured for £70,000 and the premium last year was £520. How does this compare with others?

I thought the rule of thumb was 'Just under 1% of value insured was 'reasonable'.' Therefore, £520 for £70k would seem good.

Mine is insured for £50,000 and I have had a quote of £368. So you could say that is 0.736% of the insured value. Yours would be 0.742% of the amount insured. However, I don't know if this is a reasonable way to measure boating insurance premiums, hence my interest in hearing someone's experience of a claim with Saga.
I'm sure there are lots of youthfully challenged boaters on this forum besides me

Not had to make a claim but have found them nice people to deal with so far. Our's is a raggie so may not translate exactly to your circumstances but we get a wider cruising range than most (down as far as La Rochelle). They were understanding about us wanting to do a Biscay crossing with just the two of us. Saga marine is a very small office so get pretty personal service: I always used to speak to Melanie whenever I phoned, who recognized the name of the boat. Quite surprised last time to get someone different.

Still, not made a claim so it may all change...

I looked at Saga about 5 years ago, and thought that the quote sounded good. Then I looked at the details of the policy and dropped it like a hot brick.

SAGA just paid me out. £23,000 no quibbles and easy to deal with, they could have argued the toss about loads of stuff, but did'nt. Mind, they hae asked for £660 for next year. Not a bad deal.

Yes it was restictive, especially around leaving your boat at anchor but they have updated the policy (some 3 years ago I think)and it is very similar to other insurers now

I'm another one who hasn't (yet!) had to make a claim. However, I found Saga to be very helpful last year in ensuring that copy documents ended up in the right place (the marina) on the right day - even going to the trouble, at no expense to me, of faxing a copy of my insurance details direct to the marina when our wonderful postal service failed to do what it is supposed to.

I found their cover/conditions at least as good as others in the market and the premium competitive for my first year with them. On renewal, however, they were the most expensive of six quotes I obtained /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif As I was satisfied with their reputation, service and cover I asked them to check the quote, which resulted in a reduction but still way above the average so went elsewhere. I will ask them to quote again next time around.

AHoy2.

After dealing with all sorts of insurance co's over the years. Saga is the only one, that just does what it says on the can.

£23 grand without a bleep, even though the repair quote was around £13,000. Much is down the the surveyor you get, we were lucky and got a star, took the benifit of the doubt at every turn.

Mind Saga did jib on a replaced drive coupling that was not even broke, or involved in the accident. Cant blame them for that.

Might be linked to the increased quotes this year then - passing your refit down the chain /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
