has anyone had any positive or negative experiences of this boat insurance. the stated cover appears comprehensive with the same exclusions as other policies. i wonder if anyone has first hand experience??

Had to make a major claim off the yacht Sorina a couple of years ago after the muppet crashed into my moored boat. He said they were having problems with the gearbox but hadn't bothered to get it fixed and just hoped it would be alright for a 10 day passage down to the West Country.

Took 7 months and left a bitter feeling. Saga managed to appoint probably the most incompentant surveyor I have ever met to check out the claim. He recommended some filler to carry out the repair. BA Peters in Chi did the work in the end, bill came to £6.5k.

I now give a wide berth to anyone who even looks like they might be insured with Saga.

I have used Mardon in Shopshire for 15 years, never a problem. They even covered us for a channel crossing over the phone as we entered Bray Harbour in Alderney one year after we forgot to tell them. Always very helpful.

I've got a couple of quotes from them in the last ten years and they've both been a LOT more than I've been paying, and for lesser cover. Won't bother again.

I agree with jerryat. When I sought quotations, they were a lot more expensive than the regulars, GJW, Haven Knox etc, I felt they were a bit out of their depth.

Pray, how do you tell? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Does that not elimintate mixing with at least 50% of boaters?

I looked at their policy a couple of years ago, and then read the small print in great detail. What appeared on the surface to be similar provisions to others, wasnt. Once I had analysed the cover, I walked away!

Hate to go against the trend of the thread but I'm insured with them. They were cheaper than elsewhere.
Had occasion to make a claim last year. It was a manufacturing fault and the dealer wouldn't pay up. They appointed Ed Sawyer as their surveyor and he couldn't have been better. I was seriously impressed. They were helpful and professional throughout and, more importantly, paid up without difficulty (minus the excess etc. of course).
They are, actually, Haven Knox-Johnson under a different badge, when the claim papers came through they were from H K-J.

Seems to me that having got quotes for,
1. house insurance,
2. car insurance
3. boat insurance,

the basic precept is that someone of my age should only have.

1. something modest.
2. something modest
3. something modest
otherwise pay throught the nose !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, I can explain that - their premiums would be less if they didn't have the expense of writing to me every ten minutes, trying to sell me;
boat insurance,
car insurance,
pets insurance,
house insurance
medical insurance,
etc.

What with them and American Express I don't get time to go sailing for reading the post. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Had a problem with renewing a SAGA insurance some years ago when they changed the policy to read "... the boat must be adequately crewed for any passage". After several phone calls I had about 5 different versions of what this meant varying from:

1. No single handed sailing
2. Must have at least 3 crew if going out of sight of land
3. Must have at least 3 crew if crossing the Channel etc

It seemed that whoever I spoke to had a different opion so I gave up and changed my insurer and saved ££££ with no such "strings" attached.

Keep getting mail through the post from them although when I asked for a quote they wouldn't insure my 30 foot yacht anywhere on Anglesey, North Wales. Still getting the mail shots!

That doesn't surprise me, different insurers specialise in different types of client/risk and price accordingly. Also GJW offers me a discount but SAGA doesn't.

We have just insured with SAGA, having also requested quotes from Pantaenius, GJW, and Bishop Skinner. In contrast to most experiences on this thread, SAGA offered the best price. I thought the policy offered similar coverage to the others: however I would be interested in the details of Talbot's reading of this aspect?
