Its that time of the year and SAGA have given me a good quote, I have looked at Saga before and was a bit put out that they had a clause that only applied to motorboats

"No claim shall be allowed in respect of:
loss, damage, liability or expense arising from such Vessel or boat(s) being left unattended
off an exposed beach or shore;

Very unfair to us motor boaters. If you were a Raggie it would not apply

However, it was a good price so my question is has anyone had a claim through Saga Boat insurance and what were they fair?

Cheers

Hydn (Mucky Farter) should be along soon, .... I think his claim was through SAGA and was for a fairly substantial amount. He had no problems with them.

Although I have not had to make a claim I have been with SAGA for about 6 years.

Ha Ha - I did a search for Saga before this post and found HLB's exploding bog Saga part 1

that is, or at least was, a fairly common clause in policies. Normally you just need to get acceptance that short term (beach/lunch etc) is acceptable. What they dont care for is you claiming after you left the boat at anchored for three days with no one onboard!
Often, this is the broker/agent you are dealing with, and the policy is underwritten by someone else, so they sometimes like to get back to the underwriter for an a clarification.

Scuse the thread drift, but this is much more important than insurance. Did you find the ORIGINAL exploding bog story, from 1999/2000? Would have been in the name Haydn, not HLB. It would be worth a bob or two at Sotheby's if you did, cos we thought it got lost in one of the earlier forum re-hashes

Can you post a link?

Alas no - it was Kwackers post last year entitled "Muckey Farter's Sewer (bog) Saga, Part 1"
but it reminded me of the exploding story - Or is it just a forum myth lost in the digital ether, kept alive by a band of dedicated bloggers, passed on to each new generation of forumites? - an article of faith so to speak.

Ah, shame :) The original is lost in the ether, but is very much not a myth. I was on here in the late 90s (along with the likes of HLB, Deleted User, tcm, brendans, PaulineB and others who have a 16-5-01 join date in their profile) and it was most definitely a real post. It got lost in the first big forum re-hash, in May 2001 ish

I was thinking of changing to SAGA this year but received the following comments from Bishops Skinner:

'.....I am very aware of the Saga policy wording and would contend that the cover is more restrictive in certain important areas than the AXA policy. For example Loss or damage to Underwater gear and machinery (page 3 Exclusion (n) also the policy only covers water damage to the engine following “sudden accidental incursion” of water in to the vessel –bearing in mind that the engines are the most expensive items in your boat I would say that you need some certainty about those types of damage. The clause (i) is also a worry-but they may agree to delete that if asked. Finally Section 9 clause (f) allows the insurers to replace items damaged with similar items of same age type and condition.......'

I can scan the SAGA quotation but expect others have similar clauses they can refer to, if not and you are interested let me know.

I ended up using them to get a competative price from BS so stayed with them this year!

Saga did remove exclusion clause "n" from my quote so the underwater gear is protected but not "i" which is the leaving boat unattended off an exposed shore. But Saga is cheaper. I suppose the important thing is to hear from someone who has made a claim and understand how Saga behaved.

Agreed.

For what its worth, I use them for my car insurance; SWMBO had a minor tap a few months ago and they were excellent.

But I suppose a minor tap in a car is unlikely to be as costly as one in a boat! It would be good to hear from anyone that has made a claim, to see if its worth considering a change next year!

I claimed through Saga just a few years ago. Our boat was broken into, the cabin door was smashed, the radio was stolen and superglue poured into the ignition. Saga insurance was excellent; very quick and efficient. The other advantage of Saga (apart from the low premiums) is that you get to speak to a real person, rather than lots of automated voices and pressing buttons! Any downsides? OOH yes, just one. The operators are obviously told to speak to customers in a very slow loud voice, as if we are all 98 years old and hard of hearing!!

Am completing on my 'new' boat very soon and will again go to Saga.

Good luck!

Mike.

HLB & I made a £23k claim from Saga when we left Salcombe and either hit somthing or whatever, the end result is we came back in quickly & were helped by the RNLI with their pumps. Then the fire service pumps, then a crane out. Saga were great, the RNLI were great, and the Salcombe harbour master chocked the boat up on the boat park, he was great also.

If you are going to have a sinking doo, can recommend Salcombe, but also Saga are a truly excellent company. Ask them about their policy they will probably change it for you.
