I do 40k per year 80% motorway, normally at around 85mph ish. Today on a 220mile round trip to a site meeting in N, Wales I decided to do an experiment and set the cruise control at 70mph, mainly to see what mpg I could get out of a Mondeo Ghia X TDCI Auto Estate (46mpg if anyone is interested) Anyway the point is this. What a bloody unsafe speed 70mph is. It takes an age to overtake anything, during which time people are up your backside flashing you. I pulled out a few times to allow people to merge in from slip roads only to be overtaken on the inside. You have to have eyes in the back of your head at this mundane speed. At 85mph normally you only need worry about things in front. It was a totally stressed speed to drive much safer in my oppinion to be doing 85mph. Inccidentally if anyone happens to be going on the A55 to N,Walesl. Speed cops are in abundance in unmarked cars. I saw at least three people stopped in the space of four miles.

That reminds me of my dad's tale of driving around cornwall as an apprentice during the war; traffic was so light his mate routinely went straight across cross road junctions as fast as he could because he reckoned that was the safest thing to do (drum brakes and lighting by Lucas the prince of darkness probably had something to do with this).

Anyway one day they went to redruth and came across the first roundabout his mate had ever seen;again no traffic to give a clue what to do so he drove straight over it. Happy days!

Watch the one in Mylor Bridge, they forgot to include the instructions, locals are going round it anti-clockwise.

If you were overtaking somebody else doing 69mph with your cruise control set at 70mph, I'm not surprised the drivers behind got pissed off /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I do agree with you though. I feel safer at 90-95mph in lanes 2 and 3 compared to 65-70mph in lanes 1 and 2 where you're mixing it with the heavy lorries.

Bit like one lorry on speed limiter at 56.001 overtaking another on the limiter at 56.000 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

what a rubbish post, if everyone did 70 then there would be no need to overtake. Driving has become a macho sport and thats the end of it. You dont arrive much sooner how ever fast you drive

Terrific logic!

70mph down the motorway, Porsche (or possibly Mercedes E55?) goes past at 140mph.

Gran pipes up from the back, "E won't get there any quicker you know"

Yes he will you silly old bat, he's doing 140mph, and we're doing 70, he'll be there ages beofore us!!!

There's no need to overtake, but there is desire.

But I'm confused by this not arriving sooner no matter how fast you go malarky. Can you prove it mathematically? ... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Wow, you are complaining about "only" doing 70 mph. Good thing you don't live in my location, the limit in most areas is 50 mph, with occasional short stretches of 55 mph, and even fewer parts where is a breath-taking 60 mph !

North Wales (the A55 being favorite hunting ground) is the patch of Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom.
Putting his name in Google will give you a surprising amount of information.

Don't speed in North Wales......

(I'm sure I replied on this thread yesterday........)

'tis true. The twat in the porsche will invariably piss someone off who will just not let him past and hold him up....read my wife and the twat in the porsche me!

Seriously tho, Safe speed is all down to road conditions, car and driver. I know lots of people who get a capable car but haven't a clue how to use it.

London to Manchester is 40mins slower at 70 than at 90mph. So thats 40mins on the motorway or an extra 40mins in bed. No contest

I feel completely safe and unstressed at 65....you dont need to look in the mirrors as anything should only be approaching at 5 mph, so no problem for them to brake a touch, they've obviously got a huge engine so they can easily accelerate again....
Meanwhile I get 55mpg,
My bike meanwhile only does 20mpg, and would get there quicker if I didn't have to keep re fueling, and frost bite didn't set in. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The A55 in Wales is the only place I've ever seen a 70mph speed limit and it's not even a motorway!, course then it's 50, 40, 60, 50, 40 till your going barmy. They also have an interesting way of sticking various coloured speed signs up. Then course theres all the signs, some times it's welsh first, then english, other times it's English first. The other day a woman got done for eating an apple. Cant be half as dangerous as trying to read road signs three or four times to get to the bit you understand.

I'm going to start a campain. When the welsh get to Lancashire. Halt signs will be replaced with. Eyup. Bends and other dangers by .
ecky thump!!

If all speed limits were doubled we would all get there in half the time,
that would reduce traffic by half and the roads would be twice as safe.
We would all use less fuel as we would nt have to sit for hours in queues so the environment would be cleaner. I always do me bit for the environment !
