I tried searching but got this

"The following words were not included in your search because they are too short, too long, or too common: PVC"

So I'm thinking meths? I've got some 99% pure IPA as well. Something leaving no residue

I once got impatient with a stain and got this wrong on a cushion cover. I watched it shrink up and crack before my eyes. So not acetone this time.

If you just want to clean and degrease PVC for a general purpose adhesive then meths will be fine but if you are preparing it for use with a specialised PVC solvent adhesive then the adhesive instructions might well suggest something different such as suggested by Vic.

The instructions say clean with a cleaning solvent. Its for a navisafe mount so not huge loads but of course I want it to stick properly. But I'd rather not spend more on something else to sit in a cupboard going off for a decade.

That is clearly mainly physical adhesion rather than solvent adhesion so meths will be fine for degreasing/cleaning. If it were something like an inflatable tender you would need a solvent adhesive.

It is for an inflatable tender. I'm now not clear if "the appropriate cleaning solvent for your material" means it wants something that dissolves grease and grime without harming the PVC or something which does something to the PVC. I'll contact the company. Would be nice if they made these things crystal clear for the punters.

How much better do you think that is than making sure its lightly abraded and cleaned with meths? Doesn't the adhesive have the correct chemicals to bond to the PVC?
Depends how ell you want it to bond I guess.. The solvent primer plus the correct adhesive will be good enough for your inflatable dinghy or life raft

But why are you sticking a navigation light on to a cushion

BTW Meths ( ethanol) will have very little effect on PVC. IPA ( propanol) even less

I see. I was thinking about a patch for one of the inflatable tubes which I would have thought would need a proper solvent adhesive because of the forces involved although I've never actually undertaken such patching. However, I agree that the best thing would be to contact the manufacturer.

See they don't say solvent primer. Doesn't the adhesive on the peel off sticker have the suitable chemicals to make a bond with the tube?

Its for the front bow tube for a red/green which I know isn't strictly necessary but I like the idea that anyone else can not only see me but know which direction I'm going in. I do love to be on the water at night as well so it will have enough use to justify it.

Just spoke to a Navisafe distributor who says it doesn't need anything special and recommends alcohol. I should have gone there first but anyway thanks for the answers

I've mentioned it several times, automotive panel wipe.

Cleans most things, doesn't attack plastics and is a good enough degreaser to wipe car bodywork over before spraying.

I'm quite partial to IPA myself, but my favourite beer style is Irish Red Ale :)
