Lochlomond Seaplanes will start a service to the Highlands and Islands it has just been announced on Radio 4, so it must be true /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Does this mean that we will need another forum for flying sailors?

Oho! Will they give lifts and let the passengers have a go at driving and overtake things while the pilot cowers in the back? Othrwise i don't reckon there'll be much interest hereabouts really...

I thought he had already started flying charters to Arran, Islay etc.
Or is it a schedule he's setting up?
It can't be any more a wing and a prayer operation than early Loganair.

The service has been established for a while now, but based out of Balloch on Loch Lomond. If you paid enough he would come and get you and take you to the restaurant of your choice.

The news story is I think that he has a licence to operate out of the centre of Glasgow, landing on the Clyde. If it is City Centre, then its going to be a hairy landing!

Working in Air Traffic Control here in Scotland "Loch Lomond" Seaplanes is one of my daily customers. Owned by a Cathay Pacific 747 Captain they operate a very proffesional sightseeing service using a Cessna 206 floatplane from Loch Lomond. This is great news and I know the service will be a great tourist attraction for flights direct from the centre of Glasgow to destinations out west..I can only guess the aircraft fleet will now expand to take on the new roll.....good luck to you all

Paul.

Great! When next I'm transiting up the Sound of Jura, enjoying the Tornados and Jaguars charging around at 500 knots doing Lo-Level Dissimilar ACM and Strike Progression at mast-top, I'll keep watch for a little single-piston float-plane bumbling along at 150 knots, 'thumb up bum, mind in neutral....'

And it looks like I'll need to review the ColRegs for the next time I visit Tobermory!

No problem. Rule 18(e): A seaplane on the water shall, in general, keep well clear of other vessels and avoid impeding their navigation.

After all, Colregs were written for sailors, not upstart airmen.

From their press release

GLASGOW CITY CENTRE SEAPLANE BASE CLEARED FOR TAKE-OFF
Loch Lomond Seaplanes is delighted to announce that the Civil Aviation Authority and Clydeport, the River Clyde port authority, have approved our River Clyde seaplane service departing from Glasgow's City Centre.

We are very pleased to acknowledge the help and support of all the agencies involved including Glasgow City Council who have provided a great deal of support and encouragement for this World Class tourism project.

The seaplane service will put Glasgow and the West of Scotland in the same league as the Maldives, Vancouver, Seattle and Sydney.

In addition to our existing tour and charter services we will be introducing regular flight to destinations all around the West coast of Scotland, such as Inveraray and Tobermory.

In order to provide more passenger capacity we will shortly be taking delivery of our second aircraft, an eight seat amphibious De Havilland Beaver seaplane, one of the world's most iconic and luxurious seaplanes.

All vouchers bought for our current flights may be credited towards our River Clyde services as they are introduced in the Spring of 2007.

Re: Sea planes start service soon.

It is quite a regular sight up here, but you need to be on your guard.
This is a pic i took as it accelerated past me, looking for a clear area to take of from, after the Open Golf last year.

Another time i was heading down the Loch at 35knots and i had to turn sharp to Port as i realised the Plane was coming into land towards me. I do have pics of that occasion but i think they are on my Laptop.

Colregs, what Colregs!!! I'd have my doudts if anyone knew what they were on the Loch!!!

Cheers

Alistair.
