My gearbox oil (Technodrive TMC40) needs topping up and the manual says SAE 20/30 engine oil.

So off I trot to Halfords expecting to be rewarded by a small bottle of the stuff, only to find that they've never heard of it...

Anyone?

My Technodrive fitted to Vetus says ATF on it whilst the Engine manual says Engine oil... If the manuf acturer bothered to put a label on it, I believe him and use ATF

If you really want SAE 20/30 and not a multigrade oil, you should appoach a motor factor wo will still sell the "old oil" which was replaced by multigrade about 30 years ago

My Technodrive fitted to Beta also says ATF in G/Box Manual but Engine oil in the Beta manual. I called Beta & they confirmed that it should be ATF. They even sent me a new copy of the manual with the updated info in it FOC! Not for the first time, BETA are a damn good company who know how to look after their customers, & no, I have no connection other than to own a Beta 10.

Thanks very much lads, ATF it is. I'm not sure what the effects of putting that oil in would have been (had I have found some) but I'd rather not know.

Interesting info on the side .....

2.8i cars were subject to a lot of gearbox troubles in early history .... due to lack of oil feed over one of the shafts in the box. This led to premature wear and whine.
F---s never rectified the situation properly and refused to recall motors to fix it ... so what did they do ?
a) They changed the gearbox oil to engine oil - thinkiing the lighter oil would get around better .... negligible change.
b) Then they hit on the idea of ATF instead - being incredibly light and easy to 'fling around' inside the box .... OK this gave an increase in box life ....

But the tune up boys such as Ti---rd / Ja---eed etc. knew about it and sometimes fitted that extra feed - viola instant cure.

But the real killer was the Warranty clause .... replacement box from F--d had to have THEIR oil suplied and used at silly high price, it was actually bog std ATF .... I know - I test the stuff.....(not for F--d but the Oil Industry)..... after any dealer repair or F--d 'cure' you have to continue to use the stuff until warranty period is expired ....

Well that is what it used to be ....

Thought you'd like to know !!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Interesting info on the side .....

I have a Landy 90 that requires ATF in the Gearbox. When i changed it first SAE 90 came out. The change in the box was astounding because the synchro clutches work so much better in the ATF (designed to allow friction elements to work.
