Sadler 32 - replacement Morse, and also the Owner's Association

Hi Folks,

As reported in a separate thread, my Morse lever failed this weekend. I'm sure it was original to the Sadler, being a cast aluminium housing, with large components that would probably last about 30 years....

Ideally, I'd like to replace like for like, but current designs don't appear similar.

Has anyone found a good model to replace the original with, or perhaps ideally, found a match for the original?

Also - I've had a second go at registering with the Sadler Owner's Association, using a link sent recently. I'm still not sure it is working. Does anyone administrating this website read these pages?

Assume you are talking about the control in the cockpit. If so then it will almost certainly use Morse 33c cables. In which case there is a choice on the market that all operate in the same way from such suppliers as Teleflex or Vetus. So choose one that fits the space you have.

I took mine apart and rebuilt it when it seized up a few years ago. Still going strong, but I'd be interested to know what you find to replace yours with.

My main problem was that the casing had got quite corroded and wasn't protecting the mechanism properly. I used "chemical metal" for the casing repair - and was surprised how well it worked. Still ok, but the coat of black enamel paint I gave it is now beginning to flake a bit.

Not a particular recommendation for a similar job - but it has lasted a good 10 years or more.

Took me 3 or 4 attempts to register last year but it is certainly active.

Just out of interest, did it fail under way and if so how did you manage to get home?

Even if I had spares I don't think i could reconnect or replace the cables on my 32 under way; the engine end is OK but the hatch behind the quarter berth doesn't give sufficient access to the r/o the morse lever.

This was effectively a one way delivery trip. The law of Murphy dictated that it should become extremely difficult to engage a gear on the final approach to the Cardiff Barrage lock in the middle of a fleet of impacient fishing boats, and that it would finally give up the ghost on the approach to the only available pontoon space, which was impossibly placed, with the wind behind me.

I had noted that the selector gear was worn, so being aquinted with Murphy, while I was getting the boat ready to take home, I didn't screw down the access hatch to the gearbox, and I made sure the pin holding the morse cable to the selector could be taken off in a hurry. I had a crew mate, and he stood astride the prop shaft and managed the selctor for me. (I had already degreased the 'floor' area with that in mind.) We did set up a jury rig of 6mm rope and pulleys, but we found we could not select neutral reliably, so we abandoned that, and just moved the gearbox selector manually.

If it was too windy, or anything other than dead calm, obviously the plan would be different.

Would be tricky with only one person on board - will make regular checks of cable attachment in future
