My original Bukh 10 engine and its Yanmar replacement were and are both fitted off set to starboard. I am told that all Sadlers, 26, 29 and 32 are all like this and that it is to allow the prop shaft to come past the skeg for removal. It made oil filter removal on the Bukh almost impossible and the hand cranking of the Yanmar impossible. does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this?

Hello John, this is something that I have never heard of on a Sadler. The engine (Bukh) on our 26 is straight, I can change the oil fllter pretty easily.What Yanmar have you in yours?
I have been thinking about doing the same change. Which does beg the question how do you get the prop shaft out?! There is a good Sadler dedicated forum at the Mike Lucas Yachting site. Someone there is bound to know. Cheers, Chris W S26 Chablis.
 
The 34 stern tube is definitely offset to allow shaft removal. The opposite way from your description, shaft comes out to starboard of the skeg, engine slightly offset to port. No problem at the engine end, perhaps because of the difference in scale.
 
The Sadler 29 shaft is central, or was on my '87 model. The 32 was offset.

Make sure that there is a retaining clip on the shaft - a friend of ours nearly lost his and might have sunk the boat when it became detached and was only saved by the two-bladed prop hitting the skeg.
 
Dear Chris. Many thanks for your reply. Sorry for not getting back to you before but have been a bit busy lately. The engine I have just had fitted is a Yanmar 1GM 10 with a 3.22:1 reduction gear. This is really nice, smooth and quiet and has adequate power. It is much lighter though (about half the weight of the Bukh) and sits higher in the water by about 2" at the stern. However, I wish I had kept my Bukh10 which had a warped head. I was told (incorrectly) that heads were no longer available for this engine. I found out after ordering the new Yanmar that they are @£1K. from BUKH uk.
How much clearance have you got between the dome on your engine oil filter and the the GRP engine rail/runners on which the engine mounts sit? When fully unscrewed, the filter body almost touched the rails on my old Bukh.
When I spoke to Mike Lucus a couple of years ago he didn't know of this phenominum of engine off set on its runners but would have a look at a 26 in his yard and come back to me. He never did and I forgot to chase him up. I would be wary of dumping your Bukh. John Campbell yacht "Silver Dream" Gosport.
