Farewell to Barry Sheene, a childhood hero of mine, and IMHO, a real man of the people.

Before he came to fame I recall seeing him at Oulton Park. He was riding a semi-works Bultaco 250 which was no match for the Yamaha and Suzuki's of Rod Gould and Phil Read, but he gave them and the others a real run for their money. Will never forget watching him come into Knickerbrook and diving between faster bikes, completely outriding them.

Many other memories from Donnington, Brands, Silverstone and Mallory Park, also not forgetting his amazing recovery from that horrendous Daytone crash when they wrapped a bungee cord around his thigh and foot so that he change gear.

Yes, and Adam Faith as well. Although I wasn't particularly interested in either, somehow they both figure fairly large.

Yes a very sad day, saw him a number of times at the British GP at Silverstone, including the time there was utter confusion in torrential rain when we all thought he'd won but was declared in 3rd place.

A brilliant rider, maybe too fearless, will not be forgotten.

Yes. I had no idea he was so young actually.

In the UK at least, Barry Sheene was like Stirling Moss, transcending actual achievements on the track, and becoming the definitive metaphorical fast biker. "You went round that roundabout like Barry bloody Sheene!" said the policeman, and of course we loved the compliment and admitted that yes, perhaps we had driven too fast, though almost certainly not as fast as Bazza.

A sad day indeed, I will miss him and his excellent commentary on Australian racing. Famous for his comment when Craig Lounds had a particularly bad crash, with bits of his car flying in all directions. Barry's comment: "That's a major sausage".

Averysaday Old Salt Oz..................

Yes very sad news..... I had the very real pleasure of meeting Barry Sheene a couple of times, he really was one of the worlds "nice guys". A quote which I saved up for my son when the time came.... he said " I would NEVER ride a motorbike on the road - too bloody dangerous!"............ A sad loss to the world.
