a chap was found in the water beside his tender Saturday lunch time just above the Orwell Bridge the crew of the "Volunteer" bought him ashore @ Fox's. the "Volunteer" Crew & the paramedics worked very hard to resuscitate him but i fear they failed. The Orwell Yacht Club Pennent has been @ 1/2 Mast today.

Sad indeed. You can hope it was natural causes whilst he was doing something he enjoyed rather than being a bit casual and unlucky about things we can all be a bit casual about at times. Either way a sad day for him and his family and friends.

Joe Simpson, a man who's been as close to death as any living person has, said in his book, that when that moment comes, all you want is company.

It is sad that man, I presume, was alone, but as Roger said, I hope his family can take comfort in the knowledge his was indeed indulging in something that probably brought him great peace and enjoyment.

Whoever you were, sailor, rest well.

The "Volenteer" crew were fantastic trying resus on the way in & kept it upo untill the paramedics arrived they took over & must have tried for a further 20 + mins.

I've had a few chats with John of the Volunteer at Levington. Very nice chap. I pulled some poor bugger out of the water a couple of weeks ago, and the volunteer crew came along to help get him up the marina bank. Immediately on top of the job, and no buggering about.

Further details:

A PENSIONER has died this morning after being found in the River Orwell.

Suffolk police say they think the 67-year-old, believed to be from Mid Suffolk, may have been on a boat by himself and fell into the water.

He was found in the river at about 11.20am north of the Orwell Bridge. He was still alive at the time and was taken by boat to Fox's Marina in Wherstead. He was transferred to Ipswich Hospital by ambulance but later died.

Police officers are speaking to witnesses and investigations are continuing.

As with Sailorman, we were in Fox's and witnessed the supreme efforts of the 'Volunteeer' crew and paramedics over a very long time to try and get this chap back. It seemed they had been sucessful as eventually he was taken to hospital under a blue light.
So very sad.
