Can anyone help?
We have two old sabre 212 marine diesels which are now 25 years old. One runs fine apart from the usual cloud of white smoke when starting.
The other just does not sound right and does not seem to have enough power or to produce enough revs. it also smokes (unburnt fuel). We have fitted a new turbo (last year) had the injector pump serviced, ckecked all the injectors, ckecked valve clearences and done compression tests. Have we missed something? Has anyone got any suggestions (apart from buying new engines).

If you changed the injectors of had them done, it's them call sabre's they know of a problem with either CAV or Bosch injectors , a 300hp engine had hundreds spent before they sent a different injector down and it cured the problem

Hi

If you have sorted out the turbo & injector pump, my first call would be to check the short rubber hoses that run from the turbo to the intercooler and then to the manifold. If one is split then there will not be enough air getting into the engine when the pump advances to allow for turbo. This will give you unburnt fuel.

IBTW the ebay engine looks cheap even if for spares at £500

Good Luck
Mark

Look at the raw water pipe work going to the gearbox oil cooler I have had this start to leak and the turbo breathing a mixture of air and water. Either way you are short of air, as suggested check all hoses, clips, carrying air to the engine.

Have you had the boat long? have you had fuel problems i.e. the bug, water, blocked filters. Were the engines ever running right? and last of all where are you.

ref Sabre 212 probs, firstly are your engines 212's Dover series or 210 Dorset series, the Dorset engines smoke excessively on cold start where as the Dover has more controlled fueling (dorset have manual Excessive Fuel Device on Fuel Pump).
I have experienced all of your probs with my old engine and did overhaul Turbo,Pump and Injectors but eventualy found de-laminating Exhaust Hose-which did make engine sound strange with loss of power, well worth inspecting as the hose is probably as old as the engine's. Another often overlooked item is the non-return valve on the engine twin bowl fuel filters, this is fitted in the filter head but has a ball bearing or flap valve which often let by but normally cause engine to stop when throttle increased rapidly.
Did your engine perform worse after pump was overhauled and if so there is a magic formula to set these pumps Mermaid Marine Engines no this and its well worth talking to them.
I did sort all of my engine probs but age caught up with it and the end result being "BANG" so i then changed the Smokey old Dorset for a cleaner burning Dover and what a difference.Hope this is some help. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The boat belongs to a freind who is a technophobe so I help him with all of his maintenance. I have been involved with the boat for two years. Since then the engine in question has never been right. I dont think he has had the diesel bug, certainly not in the last two years. Last season as a precaution we opened up the fuel tanks and steam cleaned them allthough they were not bad. This year we opened them up for a look see but all was fine. We also changed all five fuel filters on each engine each year. This engine always runs a little hotter so last year we checked the internal pipework on the intercooler and oil coolers for furring up. There was a little which we cleaned out but not a lot. The engine is certainly better than it was but is still not right. Lastly I am on Alderney in the Channel Islands.
Thanks for your help,

Alan.
