Sabb 10HP starting handle seized

I'm trying to start a SABB 10HP engine on a narrow boat, but the starting handle won't turn over on compression . I'm an absolute novice , so please advise what I should check first

Is there a decompression lever or the like that allows you to turn it over ? I suggest you try asking on the canalworld forum

You're supposed to use handle with compression leaver in "off" position... build up rotational speed with handle with compression off and then throw the leaver the 90 degrees into its slot ... in effect using the inertia created to get engine past the first couple of compression strokes and thus ignition...

at around 1:52 you see this guy having brought up rotational speed and then leans in and "throw" the compression leaver ... ... it has a natural slot that it falls into, so easy to do ..
