Well I,ve gone and done it. I have agreed a price with the owner today. Will arrange a date for the survey tomorrow – hope that goes ok.

Any advice how to proceed from this point. Should I be there when the survey is being done. Don’t fancy sending over big fat deposit to the broker, would rather get the survey done, and if ok, complete at a time of my choosing. How is it normally done, bearing in mind the boat is in the Med.

So, soon to become a fully paid up member of the boating fraternity, well mortgaged anyway.

Sounds great. Where in yhe Med? I have an S37, and hope to get it (her? never seems right to me!) to the Med soon. In all of the marinas I've seen on the Costa Brava, I've yet to see an S37. I think it's a great boat- loadsa accommodation. Painful handing over the wads of cash- but IMHO- which is limited- you don't really need to be there for the survey.

Howard,

She is lying in Ibizia at the moment, just sorting out the transport to bring her back to Southampton. Got three boys aged 5, they are going to love that monster aft cabin. Looked at Princess V40's and Targa 39's - both fantastic boats, but the aft cabin of the S37 does it for me.

your offer is presumably "subject to survey" and i wd guess that the survey will be okay. You will have already checked the paper trail, and it will be ready for you to pick it up. You will get a fax of the survey and need not be there, like a house survey, as will the mortgage peeps, and they shd be ready to release loot and get docs.

Meantime you might call transport companies for soonest date for (say) port leucate pickup to so'ton, and they will have done this many times. Other ports are possible, look at airports nearby from which you can fly home. It wd be an idea to do the trip sooner rtather than later - now we are in late summer, whereas in a few weeks time the gales come thru more often , and the weather has a tendency to be nasty, rather than nice.

Matt,

First of all, offer had about 9 conditions attached.

Do you know of a good Med Surveyor, Sun_coast gave me a contact who I have spoken to, but at £750 seems a bit on the high side. I know even with cheap flights it would still be more expensive to fligh a UK one out there.

The broker together with the current owner has offered to pilot the boat to Denia, which I understand is just north of Alicante. I have had a quote of £3,250 to transport back from Denia.

Considering the cost of Diesel is more expensive in the Med, do you think this would be a cheaper option than our Trip to Port Leucat, taking into account flights etc.

Yes, I think the option of him piloting the boat to Denia is pretty good, a load less hassle and he can choose the right time to go. Of course he needs to make sure the boat gets on the lorry etc etc. Ask about other expenses - reckon the dealer can cover these, berthing in denia, liftout and so on.

Don't know a cheap yet good surveyor. out there agreed, 750 seem a bit steepish. Does the dealer know anyone?

My F36 was in Menorca. I did not fly over for the survey for two reasons , 1) I knew what an F36 looked like, 2) the surveyor is being paid to look at it with a trained eye, to find any faults, so even if I said "yeah looks great I'll have it" anyway, (I'm a bit impulsive like that) be no point in employing a surveyor.

Moreover Jason took piccies of any and all faults and emailed them to me the next day, together with his draft report and recommendations. He also (at my request, due to my absence) reported on wear & tear etc. He then sent a bound set of the report together with the piccies.

His service was excellent, so I saved an additional flight, bearing in mind If I took the boat I'd be flying out there to cruise her round to del sol.

I'll get it from Denia to Gib then you can put it on a boat from there.

Hi,
I hope your survey comes out OK.
I have shipped two MoBos to the Med by top deck cargo, one last year, one this. Two companies specialise in this route, Y.S.L. & Peters. Both went without a hitch and prices are competitive. Ships discharge at either Gibraltar or Mallorca, Most importantly I was told it is much cheaper coming back, because very few actually make the return trip. It maybe possible to get your boat back by sea for as little as £2-£3.000..
Let me know if you want contacts ect.

Regards.
David

We should be swapping boats! I'm trying to get a mooring at Denia. My appartment is 20 minutes from there, south along the coast. (Altea). If you choose the road route rather than the Gib route, praps we could find a transporter who would discount for taking an S37 to Denia and bringing one back. Everyone wins that way.
Mine does not have Aircon / Genny (with ref to the previous posts that I chased down) but I have seen them on one boat. Genny goes on the port side of the port engine, with venting already aranged for engines, and its own Xhaust, and Aircon goes in the huge space by the aft berth, also used for storage, battery charger and Eberspacher heater.

The dealer will want the deposit before Survey.

Rules I have made for myself next time I buy a boat in the Med:

1)Get to know and use UK Surveyor and do a deal where you accompany him (two on Easy Jet quite cheap) Hotels cheap, car hire cheap.

2) Get Volvo Penta Dealer (not associated in any way with Dealer) to meet you at time of survey to give you diagnostics report on engine . This will show up overheats, over boosts from Turbo's and loads of other interesting stuff about the history of the engine. More useful than oil samples IMHO.

Will also show actuall engine hours

3) Take boat yourself to port for collection by road transport. If you are not confident, take someone who is (other forum members get in the queue)
The reason for this is no one is as carefull with your boat as you are and if on arrival in UK there is a fault the surveyor can say it must have happened on the delivery trip.

Getting the timing right so the boat is not waiting in the SOF fro ages (and accruing mooring charges) is important.

Check the Kad 44's for oil leaks round rokker covers.

There is a known issue with this, to do with the length of the securing bolts. I think you said these engines have done 120 hours. Tappit adjustment required at 200 I think but if it is 100 then it should have been done.

The price you are considering paying for transport seems high to me. I paid less for a 50 foot boat.

I was lucky and did not have problems but I would ensure there were no problems by following the above rules.

Good luck
