Well, I seemed to have stirred some interest in this one! Thanks for the very helpful comments.
Action is now called for. It is quite clear that the existing stud needs to be removed and the hole filled, since the stud is of unknown provenance and may be held in by not very much. I lean towards the idea that there is little extra effort and limited cost in putting in a new stud with an anode on the outside. The arguments that this might be unnecessary are persuasive but is anyone saying that restoring the anode the arrangement would be positively harmful?
Any advice on what chemistry to use to fill the hole?
