I am researching a Raymarine tillerpilot.
The S1 Grand prix is £1349 compared to the S1 at £749, yet the specifications don't seem that different. Has any forumite had problems with longevity on the S1? Is the S1GP worth nearly twice the price?

The obvious difference is the load handling abillity in relation to the vessels displacement 6000 kg vs 7500 kg. I am sure that Raymarine would say that some of the materials etc were different in the GP but who is to say. If your boat has a displacement below 6000 Kg than it would be reasonable to use the S1 uif you are above 7500Kg then you have some more research to do. All the usual caveats apply in regard to the use of autopilots ie dont expect them to cope with overloaded / unbalanced boats.

Not really answering your question, but I have an ST 4000 maintenance manual, ie the predecessor to the S1. It shows how to fit the W003 conversion kit which converts it to the 4000GP version. All it is is a drive motor and epicyclic gears to replace the originals. The electronics and drive screw appear to be the same Hardly looks to be worth nearly doubling the price, especially as the load spec. is much the same, but there you are! Presumably the components are more durable and perhaps paying for very small production volumes.

Thnx for that. I suppose the heavier one might be worth it for ocean voyaging. But on the other hand two of the S1's might be better!!!!!
I know balance is important and the Tillerpilot will in fact be mounted inside the rear cabin so will be protected from the elements.
Anyone else used one?
