I need some M6 bolts and can get Zinc Plated quite cheap from Maplins, (considering buying a selection of sizes).

The immediate requirement is to bolt a bimini to the cockpit coaming...

is it OK to use Zinc plated, or will they corrode. i.e. do they need to be S/S?

Cheers

Richard

only if you want to spend your sailing time getting rid of rust stains. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On classic boats, hot dipped zinc bolts are de-rigeur.

Lots of 'zinc plated' are electroplated and will rust very quickly.

You can decide what you want, but s/s aren't very expensive compared to good quality hot dip galv ones if you shop arround...

Does this help you decide?

If they were decent galvanised they might well do but these days they are likely to be third world spun galv with zinc so thin you can see through it. So the third world stainless bolts (use 316/A4) will do better.
