I live in Finland and am considering doing one to pass the long dark evenings. Has anybody done one and would have any particular course to recommend ? There seem to be a number of UK based providers of such courses, some with high tech graphics based courses on CD, others with a more paper based approach. Please don't reply saying go to a school. Its not possible !

I did mine through Teach Me Interactive (TMI). I have no complaints except it took a bit of time after I passed before I received the certificate.

They're RYA approved. Material was OK. Tutor was very good.

Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster classroom syllabus is the same.
*******
you sure about that? I thought YM was more detailed?

Currently doing my YM theory with a school and have observed a YM and Coastal Skipper practical exam. The theory course for Coastal Skipper and Yacht Master is the same, however in the practical exam, the understanding and application of the theory required is more detailed and thorough for YM than for Coastal Skipper.

Beware of any computer course that relies on whizzy graphics. Learning to navigate is not an arcade game and you'll get nowhere without putting the hours in studying the material, doing worked exercises and memorising stuff like col regs.

I have an interest here as I re-sell a course on behalf of the author. PM me if you want to know more.

You are right Ken - I just finished my Coastal skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased last week. Same syllabus for shorebased, different for practical.

By the way, did mine through NMCS - great material (although the initial pack did not contain the CD with the course work) - very detailed, clearly explained, tutor response times varied from 3 days to ten days though, which somewhat spoilt the experience. Seemed abit of an amateurish set-up in response availability, although, as I say the material could not be faulted. Would I use them again? Regrettably not (although in truth I do not need the Ocean qualification anyway).

This on line school gets consistently good feedback:

I remember long dark days in the Finland winter as well as nights!

Thanks for all the helpful replies, I'll take a look at some of the recommendations and may contact one or two of you for more information.

You are right about the long dark days, it was pitch black at 10.00 am this morning still and twilight at midday. Waiting for snow.
