Would any shorebased instructor (DS?YM courses) please give an indication of the 'going' daily rate for the job i.e. giving instruction. Please feel free to pm me if not willing to shout out.

Many thanks

Depends where it is because I've never had any school offer to pay mileage but full day £100. When doing 3 hour evening classes I was charging £65. Some schools will only pay their standard rate whilst others will pay the instructors rate.
Also, there are a couple of schools I would need paying in advance due to poor previous history. (Not been caught out personally.) I know of one school linked to a chandlery where the instructor was told to take goods to the value of as they didn't have the money to pay them.

Incidentally I have not seen any increase in rates for the last 3 years.

About £100 per day, sometimes less. More for a radar course. Maybe £25 per hour for evening classes organised by me; Adult Ed paid about £18 per hour, but they semm to be disappearing rapidly. Like Talulah, not seen much increase over 3 years.
Bear in mind those rates include travel, preparation and marking time.

Yes ,already qualified, just trying to find out , the going rate. Have had many PM's . Thanks everybody

Talking of shorebased courses, does anyone know if it's possible to get/give private tuition? 'Cos an instructor told me that students could take a couple of classes with him & then sit their exam, but the RYA website says courses have to involve at least 40 hours of tuition.

I'm planning to do the instructors' course in March, & was hoping to do some private tuition in London, so would be very grateful for any help clarifying this. (I have asked the RYA, who said that I'd be told all about it when I did the course...)

The reason it is 40 hours is that some course subjects are not part of the formal assessments. For example, Passage Planning is a vital skill, my students do a team exercise to practice it. Usually I teach a lot more weather than required, its another vital subject. Plus coursework is marked throughout the course. A few hours plus a couple of exams does not cover it.

No problem with private tuition, its usually better paid than evening classes, but it's still 40 hours.

If people just want to scrape through, having only studied the absolute minimum just to get the piece if paper, they are only kidding themselves and will almost certainly be found wanting when the s*"t hits the fan. Its 40 hours because there is alot to get through. Even then most students will only remember a fraction some months later but they will know where to look to remind themselves.

The best I've ever managed was £300/day for VHF courses, and £200 for day skipper / YM. Mostly £100 per day and given the level of preparation required that works out at more like£6 per hour. Not worth getting up for so I dont do it any longer, particularly since the RYA started upping fees and inspections etc.

Cant help but think that the RYA really want nothing but professional large scale schools - the days of the one man outfits, or the club classes are going.
