Did anyone else read that patronising self-serving reply to the letter in the RYA magazine conserning single-handed racing. Apparently ships don't hit you if are good for the image of the sport!
Single handed racing is prima facie in breach of the regulations, why don't the RYA own up to that and just say "but we turn a blind eye"?
Indeed the bulk of the magazine seemed to be devoted to the workings of the RYA and a an almost total waste of time and members money.

Actually I thought this months was more use than most although I did read a bit of that letter and stopped because it seemed a bit creepy.

I'm sure Rhino wasn't casting aspersions on your role as Consultant Editor, James. After all, what you write on this board is a darn site more interesting and useful than many. Trouble is, it's also more interesting than the RYA mag! Presumably there is an editorial policy and you have to follow that.

The RYA has such a broad remit now that to try and cover the interests of all is impossible. Surely that's why there are quite a few boating magazines sitting on the shelves of newsagents and I suspect multiple title readership is pretty low. Try as I might, I can't get thrilled by double page coverage of national dinghy class racing. I'm quite sure that a dinghy racer would be bored to tears with paragraphs about the ICC. Is membership not high enough to sustain a number of magazines, each one geared towards a particular interest? Maybe not, but I do think that the magazine itself is only a reflection of the relationship between members and the RYA

I read the bit concerning single handed racing and thought it was cr*P and very blinkered. Also the mag seems to totally lack any theme, probably becaouse it tries to be all things to all people (nearly said men, not PC!).
As I've said elsewhere on this forum this is my first year of membership & I am very unlikely to renew my membership next year.

I agree, the mag must cost a lot to produce but I read it in under 10 minutes. I've no interest in canal boats, yacht racing, windsurfers, pedalos or whatever. And, yes, that singlehanded reply was wishy-washy in the extreme.

I was fed up with the perceived lack of information regarding the new SOLAS regs earlier this year. I am sure cruising yachtmen make up the majority of RYA members, but what do we get in return?

wot du expect for yo money? for what it is, it is just fine.

They can be a bit sniffy on some issues but that is just politics. RYA is great value overall at £27 p.a.

When buying my last boat, the amount of free legal help I got from the lovely Claire Bradley was worth 20 times the subscription alone.

I also got a £6 voucher to by my crew 'their book'.

I also got a nice bag worth £20 to carry all my yachtmaster stuff around in.

I also get access to heaps of info on their website

If I wanted it I would also get a free sail number, normally £25 to everyone else,

oh, and a nice mag every few months and a little sticker for me car

Think I should be paying em more.....NO stop it.

If you're a consultant editor for the RYA mag perhaps you might suggest to them they employ a proper designer. It looks like a dogs dinner.

It was not a compliment. I and I suspect the vast majority of members probably don't give a D*** about committe structure etc. There is probably only a few pages of interest to any one person.
The RYA may do many good things but this mag is not one of them, just from interest what does it cost to produce and ship a single copy?

Looking at the advertising content and the circulation, I'd be surprised if it wasn't making a tidy profit (sorry surplus) for the RYA.

Re: RYA Mag & Mckinsey red rag

Having been a member for some years I can see the RYA getting its act together - albeit painfully slowly. There seems to be a small movement with the appointment of each new DG (and that's not too frequent) followed by somnambulence magna!

My present concern is the consultants; having been party to three Mckinsey studies in my professional existence, and their costs, and the predictability of the outcome I would like to know what RYA committee member takes the can for hiring them? And how much did we pay for this study, that no-one on the managing committee could produce for himself?

You doubt me? Read the principal recommendations - smaller management committee, and more focus on delivery to paying members. Oh, and if there are any biscuits left over after morning coffee, perhaps a little effort to stimulate wider interest in boating!

Lord, give me strength.

Pro bono

As you no doubt got your information about the McKinsey report from the RYA Mag, you probably have also read that it was a 'pro bono' report - ie free, bar expenses

I can assure rhinorhino that he does not speak for the majority of members and I have no evidence that I do either. But I do agree with David_e in all the points he makes.
You seem to forget that the magazine is the journal of an association and as such it compares well with most journals I can think of. I sail a cruiser but am interested in hearing about most water sports, but perhaps I, too will get sad when I age ! And - what a stunning job they did on bring along the strongest British Olympic sport to great success, as well as continuing World championship successes. Strength to their collective elbows.
I am less happy about them backing out of the Solent enquiry, though.

Check out some pictures of my boat at;
