All being well, I hope to be the new owner of a Bavaria 34 which is presently in Poole. When it is mine I will need to get it from Poole to the Sovereign Harbour Eastbourne.

Not being experienced and needing some revision I would like an RYA Instructor who would be able to skipper the yacht from Poole to Eastbourne and take me through the chartwork and pilotage needed and other boaty matters commissioning the boat.

I would hope to find another willing crew member to accompany me.

Can any forumite recommend a delivery skipper who would be able to do this?

Thanks Graham, That looks very interesting.

Survey should be next week with Anthony Byred, local to Poole. i should be able to complete before the end of the month, which puts some time pressure on.

Lots to think about and do, insurance, SSR, charts, lifejackets, flares, more clothing and a host of other things. Hectic and exciting.

Is it Powder Blue you are buying?

If so my boat is moored about 10 berths down. Happy to give any help if you need it. Not, though offering to help you sail it as not a qualified commercial skipper but having a friendly face around often helps.

Rob at Poole sailing was very helpful a few years ago for a very similar task.
Google Poole Sailing I think they are the fist links to appear

Any big sailing school will know a lot of self employed instructors, or offer 'own boat tuition' themselves.
A lot of RYA examiners are 'freelance', is there a list somewhere?

Back from work. My thanks to all.

Tranora, yes it is Powder Blue. I will not be down until again until survey day which is yet to be confirmed, it should be the end of next week, as Anthony Byred is in Holland at the moment.

I will pm when I know the day if that is alright with you. I passed a newer Bavaria 34 on the way down the pontoon.

Milestone, I will have a look at them, as Iw395 says there are a lot of schools out there and they all know people. However I was looking for recommendations, often the best way to find a good service.

Fr J Hackett, indeed, I think he is highly regarded but would he want to spend the time with me a backslider from the PB’s.

Yes, that's mine, although it is a 33 built just before they renamed it 34 and put the price up!

Previously had a 37 of similar age to Powder Blue. pretty familiar with Bavarias of that era having been involved in chartering such boats including my 37.

Look forward to hearing from you

In this case it is worth what I am prepared to pay. To me an inexperienced owner taking time, getting it all done safely and learning on the way is worth more than having a someone donking it non stop all the way.
You can get day rates from a delivery skipper and work out the cost for 100 mile trip.

What about our very own rev.

If you are referring to me, I’d be delighted to help (and it’s exactly the sort of job I’ve taken on in the past). However, I’m just about to go sailing on our boat for the first three weeks of August and then I’m back to host a pre- tour bbq for fifty choristers and choir men (and the choristers chaperones) before we go to sing in various venues in Venice for a week.

John, how kind of you, I did think of you before I posted but then you have such a high profile here I was afraid to ask. Unfortunately, I have been told I will need to move the boat on completion which will happen when you are away.

Should I have need for it I have my very own Rev Brother for solace, we both have had issues from the EB's not the PB's who are generally petty good.

I have an offer for assistance and will use Will from Whitedot Sailing who came with a recommendation, for the delivery and instruction.

The delivery is not the most expensive part and will be worth every penny for a safe passage, the remedial work and commissioning is where money will have to be spent.

Hi Lucy

Great. We spent 5 days with Will doing our own delivery voyage to Eastbourne, and own-boat familiarisation / training, that was money well spent. He's very easy going and good company. Let us know how it goes :)
