Hi,

Did the Diesel Engine Course at Top Lock Training in Marple Stockport yesterday.

Excellent course, and I think I now have a reasonable knowledge of every part of the propulsion system, including the ability to service and maintain the whole thing, from filters to injectors, propellor shaft bearing and stuffing box.

If you are a bit wary of your diesel engine, or do things without really knowing why, the course is well worth doing!

Cheers

Richard

I see they do these for diesel engines, and the RNLI skipper card in PBO for the last couple of months is for diesel inboards, but what about the 000's of us that only have outboards?? Can't they do a course for us? I would have thought that PBO would have included this as it seems together with the RNLI they are trying to reduce callouts for engine breakdowns. I suspect the outboard is as likely to break as the inboard....

Hey! You bought a Moody 44, then. If you remember we discussed one particular one on offer at Hamble last year. Lovely boats, hope you enjoy yours.

Can you grind and seat valves

Not a chance! <g>

but on Wednesday I was frightened to death of bleeding the water out of the filters.... now I would feel happy changing an injector..... once I have done the RYA contortionists course <g>

"Can you grind and seat valves"

And if you could, would you carry all the tools and equipment required to do so aboard eg.

Lots of bags / containers / labels for the bits, diesel pipe bungs, firm workbench with lots of space, valve spring compressor, dial gauge, any engine specific tools, lapping tool, 2 grades of paste, vessel to clean components after grinding, top-end gasket / seals kit, torque wrench and about a day of sea room (if you are lucky, or equivalent in anchoring power) to get the job done?

Oh yes, and a constitution made of the same stuff as the cylinder head to dismantle / fix / re-assemble underway?

Alternatively, do you now know where to find the important bits, understand what they do, how they are likely to let you down, and which prombems you have a chance of fixing whilst underway?

Course you do.

Grinding valves!!!!!
Don't worry, I can't imagine a situation where you have set out with a working engine that will need it's valves grinding before you get back.
