Ive booked the first course guys, the RYA Powerboating Level 2, at Lagoon Watersports, so looking forward to that. The Day skipper theory is an online course, and you have upto 12 months to do it, however i will complete it as quickly as i possible can .Would i be able to enroll for that now, given, that i have zero knowledge, or should i wait until ive completed the practical course. (as you have probabley gathered i cant let the grass grow under my feet lol ).Thankyou

I know someone who completed day skipper with limited boating experience and the only sea hours were those on the instructors boat as required for the course.

Some of the Theory course you won't use just yet or on the level 2 thingy but it's worth doing before the L2 course as it will put a few thgins in your mind such as tide and course to steer etc.

The next step will be to just get on the water and play..does not matter what on.

Good luck and you will love it.

I hope i do Sam, nothing for such a long time, as taken my attention, so i hope it continues

Good luck and you will love it.

Exactly what I did - very little boating experience and even less rope tieing experience!.. Although in the end I had to leave the course early so did not do any night driving, so just received an ICC (rather than the day skipper) which is actually what I wanted in the first place. Did all theory in UK and actual boating in Barcelona - to get used to med mooring.

That's it , ive paid for my day skipper theory, I have to wait for stuff to come in the post now before I start....Cant wait to get started. I cant remember the last time I was so interested in something !

Book the theory course. It will go into a lot more depth than the PB2, which is really light on the theory.
I don’t like the online course, much prefer a classroom.
You may find within the online course there is a possibility of attending a day tutoring session somewhere.
And buy a few books, the RYA ones for that particular course tell you just what you need and no deeper

I have booked the
Day Skipper Theory, its a prerequisite for the Day Skipper Practical, unless you have the relevent experience, and i dont have any.Cant wait for the stuff to come so i can get started!

Exactly what I did- Day skipper theory, then PB2 ( that got me an ICC too) then the VHF course. I think you will really enjoy the theory stuff too. best of luck

Unless things have changed and knowing the money grabbing RYA....i'm not a fan....you don't actually need to do any theory course before a practical.

I'm a Yachtmaster instructor and i've never done a theory course in my life....i taught myself everything form books.

When i've been teaching people i used to tell them that as long as they can do the theory on the boat when needed that was fine for me.

Ive got the VHF course, they have given me the code in my email, so im going to start on that tonight, probabley the wrong way round i know, but i cant do the Day Skipper Theory till all the stuff comes in the post. Im like a kid at xmas lol

VHF usage is covered by the day skipper usage from memory. Don't think I have used mine in the med in last 3 years.

Sending a MayDay is covered and that is about it. For the Uk it is a legal requirement to do the course and pass the exam. I believe also the case for the Eu (ICC is also required for EU)

True you don’t need to the theory but it is recommended otherwise (unless you already have knowledge and experience) you will struggle on the practical

You have to pass the exam to get the SRC, "Short range certificate" ie license. No obligation to do a course, but its technically illegal to use the radio unless you or another person on the boat holds a licence. There are no legal requirements for training for leisure boaters in the UK.

As a newbie in 2011 I had to do the PB2 to get insurance and needed insurance to get on the marina. So did it before I got a boat.
