Does anyone know of any Solent/central south coast based RYA training schools who run courses on gaff rigged boats? I'm looking for somewhere suitable to do my Coastal course. previously been to Cornwall, but could do with something closer to home.

Some classic charter operators offer RYA training. Best thing is probably to check Classic Boat magazine - January issue - as it has the annual charter guide.

Trinity Sailing in Brixham do some excellent RYA courses on their 52 foot gaff cutter Golden Vanity. I friend of mine recently successfully did his yachtmaster with them and i they do regular day skipper courses.

Yes indeed, sailing then by Peter Crowther, she was restored by the Golden Vanity Trust in the 1980s and is now operated as a sail training and charter vessel by Trinity Sailing, fantastic boat!!

I spoke to Peter Crowther when he had Galway Blazer and asked hin about Golden Vanity. He took 88 days for the crossing and said that whatever he did, the boat wouldn't do more than 3 knots. Have they sorted her out?

Maybe the wind gods were repelled by the orange/yellow colour scheme!

3 knots!! Like all working boats she is not fast, but in a decent amount of wind she will quite happily do 6 knots +. Passage planning is based on a speed of 4 knots, so looks like she has gained a knot!
She was out of interest the overall winner of the 1995 Tall ships race, winner of Class B in 2004 and regularly gets podium positions, and is completing in this years 50th anniversary race.....arhh handicaps are great!!
