I am trying to find out how one becomes an RYA Instructor/Chief Instructor?
I have always imagined that one would be very experienced across a wide range of RYA disciplines and possess an above average ability of sailing?
Can anybody help?

Hiya. Try this:

Cruising and Yachtmaster Instructors | Instructor Training | Teaching | Courses & Training | RYA - Royal Yachting Association

The RYA publication Instructor Handbook G27 contains a lot of advice although in my opinion, the older version was better!

A Chief Instructor is purely an appointment within a Recognised Training Centre. For smaller schools, can be the Principal too. Responsible for ensuring the laid down training standards are met amongst all the RTC instructors and mentoring their progress. Oh, and 'encouragement interviews'.

Hope you achieve your aim.

A training background of some kind is useful but not essential. Being a competent sailor is.

Plus of course, witty, charming, infinitely patient, hardy, brave, resourceful and relaxed. Plus an ability to live on a small commercial vessel with three to five others, changing every week, week in , week out whatever the weather with huge responsibility on less than the minimum wage in Peru.

You have to like it. ?

Yes, it always appealed to me, as a romantic notion.

But after doing a week's pre-YM practical assessment prep. with Southern Sailing in the Solent, one freezing cold, gale-laden, Decemeber, many years ago (on board 'Southern Rival', with 'One-eyed Brian', the very laid back Instructor), I decided that private sector lecturing in accounting and business strategy might give a better life-style balance, for me.

What you do not clearly say is what type of RYA instructor you want to be , dinghy sailing, offshore sailing, power boat, etc some instructors do not need to be highly qualified such as paddle boarding etc, others such as YM you need to have pass the various RYA courses long before you are even assessed to become an instructor.

Then once qualified you need to progress as an Instructor, Advanced instructor, Trainer etc and experience is what its all about, however whilst experience is essential that does not necessarily make you a good instructor and that's something else to learn

If I can help send PM
Mike (RYA Instructor)
