RYA certificate for short hop Channel crossings ?

You could try crewing for someone as your first crossing. After all the courses I did, I learned the most just by crossing as crew. It was quite an eyeopener experiencing the big commercial boats and how close they seem and how quickly they appear, you don't really experience that in the Solent. Watching Bobc of this parish crash-stop mid channel to avoid one was a good learning experience :)

Crossing as crew is a good start, but crossing as skipper for the first (or every time), is somewhat more buttock clenching.

Not clear whether the OP is seeking training - ie wants to know how to make the crossing or questioning the need for a piece of paper.

Neither. The OP is making a "joke" based on recent migrant crossings. The fact that this remains in scuttlebutt rather than being moved to the Lounge is a reflection on Time inc. and the image they are happy to project of boaters. It also damages the trust in this forum of people replying in good faith

That doesn't seem entirely fair on Time Inc, it's (some of) the boaters who are posting on here who are not so much projecting an image but more displaying the reality of their attitudes. Moving it to 'the lounge' or indeed censoring their posts won't change the existence of their rather ignorant views.

Fair point. However I suggest this thread belongs in the Lounge because:
- This is not the first thread where people are tricked into replying in good faith to a wind-up. It wastes people's time and makes people suspicious of legitimate (though "unusual") questions
- We all have differing political opinions. I come to this forum to read about boating, not listen to people's political views and this is not the first of these threads. That's what the Lounge is for
- Yachting doesn't have a positive image in the wider community. Confirming stereotypes isn't helpful.
- What is moderation for if not to keep the yachting forums on-topic? (hmm...does this post itself belong in the Lounge? meta-posting conundrum!). Given that moderation exists, classifying a thread started to have a laugh at asylum seekers as a bit of banter relevant to yachting states a position I doubt many large corporations would be happy with.

I'm not saying "ban a particular political opinion" I'm saying keep politics out of our sailing discussions. That's what the Lounge is for.

Concur.

You do realise the OP is a wind-up, don't you? Any RYA course for asylum seekers should include fishing boat mechanics.
The OP is a very serious individual, his user name gives that away, and asked a question in this forum thus needs to be addressed.

He has not replied to the thread since the OP, so here is a list of sailing clubs that I know members of, all within a few miles of Dawlish, who can help him reach his goal of sailing across la Manche. I am sure if he rocks up and asks for training and the opportunity to crew for them he will be welcomed with open arms.

As I am now based in Plymouth that gives a much shorter crossing without passing his home port, but had I still been on the Exe I could have picked him up from the beach before heading south into the night passing all our favorite light houses, Berry Head and Start Point.

+1
There will of course be the necessary VHF certificate. Generally only tested in English it seems.
Though I did do my YM Theory course in Belgium.
