Hi,
I'm thinking of asking Santa for a book on navigation for use as a reference manual & would be interested in opinions on the above, or any alternative recommendations. TIA

Over the years Ive bought a couple of updated rya navigation manuals, I think they are well laid out easy to understand, also good for future reference, tidal calcs etc are laid out in tried and tested format.

Happy Christmas!

The latest RYA nav book (very recently issued ISBN 0-901501-93x by Tim Bartlett) is excellent, and better than its predecessor. But make sure thats what you get - three of my class got sold the old one by a lazy chart agent.

I have read the other replies to your post and I am pleased that at least the RYA has got something right. Here I must express a personal interest because I did the proof reading of the new Navigation Manual and I found it to be clear, concise and very easy to follow.
After 27 years as a shorebased tutor, 29 years as a YM Examiner, and as a Fellow of The RIN I thoroughly recommend it it. I also recommend its companion volume the RYA Book of Navigation Exercises c/w two charts by Chris Slade and Sara Hopkinson. It will give you endless enjoyment and fun instead of guzzling over Christmas!! During the proof read I did every question in the book and checked the answers so if you find any mistakes you can blame me.

There's a new Glenans but I'm not sure if it's in English yet. It just would be a pity to buy one and then have a new edition come out soon!
