RYA and BMF hail "Common sense solution"

Re: RYA and BMF hail \"Common sense solution\"

In essence, the BMF are saying that it could have been worse for their members: they might have had to put in new infrastructure to dispense fuel. Whilst they may have no sympathy for the punters who ultimately keep them in cheap suits it is quite remarkably crass to rub our noses in it.

Out of curiosity:

The decision will see boaters paying more duty on fuel than any other non-commercial users in the country

[/ QUOTE ]

I was trying to think which other non-commercial users actually do use diesel.

Re: RYA and BMF hail \"Common sense solution\"

The point is: no other consumer segment uses heavy oil taxed at the full rate. All other uses of this fuel are commercial, and therefore subject to a rebate. We will be the only non-commercial users of this fuel.

In a clunky way, I was saying that boaters will become the highest taxed group of consumers in the country for their fuel. Light oil, or leaded petrol, is subject to a slightly higher duty, but I'm not aware of any widespread use of this fuel.

You are right, of course. As trade associations, this is a common sense solution for their members. Could have been put more, er, tactfully, mind you.....

Re: RYA and BMF hail \"Common sense solution\"

However, with this method of collection, could they not have implemented the lowest duty permitted by the EU?

Re: RYA and BMF hail \"Common sense solution\"

Read your sig properly just now. It could have been written for the body under discussion. Although the "spotanda" may be a less big one if they don't wake up to being nice to the people who buy from them.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes. Next question! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don't know why I'm making a fuss, really - my boat is petrol engined so I am already experiencing maximum pain.

Probably time for another chorus of this Golden Classic, from December 2004:

God rest ye merry, Forumeers let nothing you dismay!
Except the price of diesel that you’re going to have to pay,
In 18 months or so, when the EU has had its way.

Oh, sod this, I’m going down the pub, down the pub,
Oh, sod this, I’m going down the pub.

And when they heard the ghastly news, the Forumeers all said
“**** this for a game of chess, I’m going to the Med
Or buying a displacement craft and going slow instead.”

Oh, sod this……

And some said that we should resist and lobby our MPs,
“Engage them in debate, and cite the freedom of the seas,”
But Politicians think that we’re as popular as fleas.

Oh, sod this…….

And others aim to dodge the tax; their plans are carefully laid,
They’ll sell it 13 miles offshore, with Guernsey duty paid
But Excisemen are on the ball, and planning their first raid…

Oh, sod this…….

The raggies are rejoicing, as their enemy is slain.
The Solent will be empty, like a tranquil country lane,
But even they will find the extra cost to be a pain.

Oh, sod this……

But there are some who’ll see no change, their spending will stay steady
For them there’ll be no change of price, or moving to the Meddy,
‘Cos if you’ve got a petrol boat, you’re being fleeced already /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Oh, sod this…….

And unto Mister Gordon Brown the Forumeers all hum,
“We do not want to see your bill when higher prices come
- So imitate a Pelican, and stick it up yer b*m…”

Oh, sod this………..

Re: RYA and BMF hail \"Common sense solution\"

IMHO, it could have been a lot worse and the BMF is right. Firstly, they could have ruled that all leisure boaters had to buy white diesel which would have meant fuel vendors storing and selling 2 types of diesel. Of course many would'nt so fuel availability would have decreased. Second they could have retained red diesel but made everyone pay full price for every litre and then claim back any tax for commercial or heating use. That would have been a nightmare. Third they could have made the vendor legally responsible for deciding how much red you could have for heating or deciding who was really a commercial user. That would have lead to disagreements between boaters and vendors and probably, eventually vendors refusing to sell red to leisure boaters
All in all, it could have been a lot worse

Re: RYA and BMF hail \"Common sense solution\"

I dissagree with you Mike

Your first point - I believe that by putting the full duty on red, they have opened the door for dual diesel fuel supplies cos the ULSD is cheaper - typical government ploy. In fact they HAVE ruled that we have two diesel fuels.

Your second point would NEVER have happened because they couldnt hit the genuine fishermen with a cash flow burden like that.

And your third point - are you sure they wont make the vendor responsible?

Anyway, I agree with the most of these posts - the RYA are a bunch of tossers.

Could somebody please tell me what the bloody RYA actually do? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Nothing for mobo'ers that's for sure.

Re: RYA and BMF hail \"Common sense solution\"

Time to dust ourselves down and get on with it. It's history now, so little point whinging about it. Its a 44% increase which sure is bad but not as bad as it could have been. Think negative and let it spoil our hobby, or be positive and just "get on with it".

Too much hysteria about "spilt milk"

The French, Spanish, German and Scandanavians have always had to pay full whack for fuel. Time we stopped moaning like a bunch of old hens. Positivity!
