Extract from final paragraph of RYA email regarding certificate delays:

"We would be grateful if you could ensure that your students are made aware of these delays where appropriate. In particular, for people needing qualifications urgently (for example ICC’s) we would ask that you make them aware of the Fast Track option. Where possible, we would ask that you avoid emailing or phoning to follow up on your certificates if they are not time critical and certainly if they have been sent within the last 12 weeks "

Question; If I have completed the VHF Short Range Certificate course & Passed the exam, I have the Temporary Pass Certificate and my portable DSC VHF radio is licensed, with ships portable radio ‘T’ callsign and MMSI would it be wrong to say why should I wait 3 months for the RYA to get their act together and send me the certificate before actually operating? Considering how many out there have neither licence or certificate of competency! - Surely candidates should not be unfairly disadvantaged by RYA administration inadequacies!

Disappointing from the RYA. Not the best way to attract new members.
It's been caused, mostly, by the huge popularity of RYA certification.......

I understand that they aren't just sitting back collecting wonga but actively hiring and training new staff whilst staff members from other departments are helping out.

That’s good to know, I need my ICC back by September, I sent it early May so hopefully it’ll arrive.

Unfortunately the Greek charter companies won’t accept photos of me on my boat looking cool as proof of competence, so I will have to wait it out.

OK, they've got problems: s**t happens and it's perhaps understandable that working from home interferes with the issue of physical certificates. But let's give credit where credit is due: they've acknowledged the problem, they've admitted it publicly and they're making efforts to resolve the situation. Not cashing cheques until applications are processed might be appropriate but the same can't be done with electronic transfers.

No complaints from me. It was just a shame they didn’t say at the time of applying there was a issue. But all is good in the end

Agree. RYA is by no means the only organization that is unable to provide a proper service nowadays. It appears to be the new normal in modern Britain.

My ICC was applied for on the 23rd June and despatched by the RYA on the 28th July (5 weeks rather than the 5 - 6 weeks quoted).

when I last checked, admittedly some years ago, Offcom had never taken anyone to court for anything. I have never even seen an Offcom man at a marina. I have all the paperwork personally but I wouldnt worry if I had no paperwork at all.

It was some time in the 80's when I found an official notice inside a plastic bag taped to a shroud asking for details of the boat's and operator's radio licences. That was in Lerwick, almost as far north as you can go in the UK.

I have been on commercial vessels during MCA inspections when radio licences have been required along with all the other ship's documentation.

You could be asked for licences along with other documentation when checking in to foreign ports.
