Had a Rutland 913 for about 9 months, works well when away from marina & has been pretty quiet. However, it has suddenly started to make a rumbly harsh noise :( anyone else had this problem?

It has always been allowed to run free.

I had a Rutland charger that had this problem. Turned out to be the bearings which I managed to change without too much difficulty. Rutland's technical guy told me that the problem was caused by me stopping the blades from spinning when charging was not required (but I see you didn't make this mistake). Apparently this allows rain water to get into the bearings easier and also causes the bearings to wear unevenly.

It's the bearings. My advice is to send it to Marlec and let them do it for about £50. I'm sure some can do it very easily, it took me hours before I gave up!

Had a similar problem on my friends boat. Original bearings failed after 12/18 months.
I stripped the unit and got the local tool repair shop to press off the old bearings, a couple of £. Bought new bearings from a local supplier, and a tube of "Loctite" and fitted myself. The replacements have lasted for about 5 years now. Touch wood!
Check your Yellow pages for local supplier and tool repair man.
Also good idea to check slip ring wear when you have it apart.
Marlec very helpful.

At the boat show a few years back I was talking with the nice lady from Rutland, no she did not know Eric Idle.. Anyhow, they where ever so proud of their design which apparently meant the bearing would last much longer and would prevent any water ingress. It all sounded very impressive.

After reading this, I am glad I went with aerogen, whos gear is more agricultural in concept. I was quite pleased recently when I changed our bearings at how simple (read repairable) the aerogen4 is, tractor technology, does what it says on the tin.. etc.

Sorry, not adding much to this thread, just a bit disappointed at how long bearings are not lasting in the Rutland units.

Well, Marlec say they will repair it if I send the unit back, it is only 8 months old.
Not very impressed though as I have never tied it up.
Expect the shipping will be costly as well :(

Good luck...I have nothing but problems with them. Had 4 new 503s that vibrated, one so much that it knocked the bearings out in a season. Then I got one specially built by their 'top engineer', you could feel the play in the bearing set!!! Not impressed.

And, yes the carriage will cost you a fortune.

My 503 lasted about 2 years before it started to make a lot of noise...
