Bit close to the steelboat painting thread but still. My boat has a very rusty CQR anchor but it is passed as fit by the surveyor. Previous threads mention the pros and cons of re-galvanising and it does not really look like a good option. Replacement cost (unless I can get a second hand one) would be high (its a 55lb model), and there are more important things to spend the money on so, my question,

What about Galvafriod - very expensive paint but said to be really good and loves rust! Silver Hammerite, might not last so long - but cheaper and cheerful.

What do you guys think from your experience?

I see nothing wrong with re-galvanising the anchor. Talk to a road trailor manufacturer to see if they will include it in with their own parts for galvanising and it will be a lot cheaper.

I would not consider re-galvanising chain, although some people do.

Not used galvafroid, but our once-galvanised mast step has suffered rust streaking for years, despite regular chipping and repainting by SWMBO. Last year she used a new (to us) high-zinc primer under the usual white smoothrite and got very little rust streaks, only where it had got chipped.
That's the problem with painting your anchor I expect, it looks fine until you use it and chip the paint. Galvanising is much harder.

My experience of Galvafroid, on a partly rusty CQR was that within a few months rust was starting to show again. I think this is a function of the anchor wearing away the surface coating which is inevitable.
I have had an anchor re-galvanised in the past as part of a job lot I had done for work - in that case it was not expensive, but if on it's own it may be expensive as it is charged on weight(as I remember). Speak to a couple of Galvanisers and see what they say - I suspect it will still be cheaper than a new CQR...... and much better than any paint.
I see you are in Devon - pity, because my CQR also need re-galvanising and if they could be combined would be cheaper. See if anyone else needs any galvanising done in your club/Marina and perhaps a decent load could be made up.

My well-used 30kg Bruce is galvanised and also painted. The paint takes the wear and is easily touched up as necessary, while the galvanising underneath is protected by the paint and allowed to do it's job of preventing rust. The only rusting I get is on the anchor shackle which is not painted.

Thanks Guys. Looks like further investigation of the re-galvanising followed by Galvafroid if a can beg a drop from our on-site contractors. The stuff costs £26 odd for 800mm!! One coat!

Forget Hammerite.

The shackles are rusted solid but a fiver should replace them in the short term til I can get the proper stainless one.
