How's this--the Russians captured the pirates, tied them up, put them on their own boat, then set them all on fire--poof, no more pirates. No PC bulls sh&t here.....

This video shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somali pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. Our normal patrol who normally police these waters would not interfere because they "feared there could be casualties."

All the dialogue is in Russian, the single exception being when a wounded pirate says something in English and the Russian soldier says "This is not a fishing boat." If you don't understand Russian, that's fine; the pictures speak for themselves. The soldiers freed their compatriots and the seized tanker. The Russian Navy commandos moved the pirates back to their own pirate boat, searched it for weapons and explosives, then set the boat adrift and detonated it with all remaining pirates handcuffed onboard.

All without any pesky international court proceedings, lawyers etc. They executed the operation under anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries in which the captain of the rescuing ship is allowed to decide what to do with the pirates (usually, they were hanged).

I'm guessing that word from this operation gets out, Russian ships will seldom be targets for Somali pirates.

I wouldn't have thought it would be allowed to happen.....

And who's going to stop them on the high seas?

Do you really think Putin gives a damn about "World Opinion" or NATO? If so, he hasn't shown any signs of it in the past.

Searush, don't get me wrong on this 10/10 to them perhaps if it was how we all dealt with them it would not be such a big Problem.....

However I would suggest this won't half upset the Guardian readers. ;)

I think those are two separate and distinct films. One in daylight, 'tother at night.

The video was very carefully edited to exclude the Russians' faces, though.

Similar to the Terry Waite kidnapping many years ago. At the same time he was taken so were 3 russian diplomats, different approach by the russians, rather than negotiate they kidnapped 3 known local members of the group that carried out the abduction of their diplomats, decapitated one of the locals and returned his head to his associates and let it be known that unless their people were released unharmed 2 more heads would 'be in the post'.
Result was their people spent 1 week imprisoned before release, unlike poor old Terry's 5 years !!!
Much as your average Grundian reader may dislike the notion you can only reason with these people at a level they understand.

I can't find an original news article, so wiki will do for now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Group

The Alpha (Alfa) Group (also known as Spetsgruppa A) is an elite dedicated counter-terrorism unit that belongs to spetsnaz (special-purpose forces) of the FSB (former KGB), or more specifically the "A" Directorate of the FSB Special Operations Center (TsSN).

In October 1985, Alfa was dispatched to Beirut, Lebanon, when four Soviet diplomats had been taken hostage by a Sunni militant group. By the time Alfa was onsite, one of the hostages had already been killed. The perpetrators and their relatives were identified by supporting KGB operatives, and the latter were taken hostage. Following the standard policy of 'no negotiation', Alfa proceeded to sever some of their hostages' body parts and sent them to the perpetrators with a warning that more would follow if the Russian hostages were not released immediately. The tactic was a success and no other Russian national was taken hostage in the Middle East for the next 20 years, until the 2006 abduction of Russian diplomats in Iraq.

Thanks

A little bloodthirsty; I think any Russian nationals would do well to lose their papers over the side if they're on a ship being hijacked, Indian nationals have suffered worse treatment at the hands of pirates since their navy and coastguard took similar 'positive' action.

If you want to put them to death summarily, shoot them; setting them on fire is just barbarism.

I can't see any indication in the video that the pirates were on the boat when it was blown up. Unless it's clear from the dialogue (I don't speak Russian), then it seems far more likely they've detained the pirates then destroyed their boat.
