After the discussion on collision regs and disgust expressed on the forum I popped up to London and put the case and:

the Court of Appeal has ruled that jetskis are not ships

Open season??

I think you have a little problem .... Jetskis are not the same as water skis or snow skis ... you don't need one for each foot! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

A quiet one eh? They're the most dangerous. Just pootle up to them when they're aground and ask them if they'r alright, then you'll see embarrassment. Especially when the 18 year old daughter asks for a lift ashore. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What I meant was stick a few details in your biography, as it helps people "talk" at the best level for the participants.

It would be be very useful if, as an experienced PWC owner, you could join in the discussion. It's very easy to tar all jetskiers with the same brush of bad or dangerous behaviour, and it's important for traditional moboers and raggiers to know that PWCs do have a good record in safety / rescue / beach lifeguarding.

If the phrase I used did cause offence, I apologise.

No offence taken, i cannot really comment on most of the posts that have been written as i never use the sea its a pretty dangerous place and a lot of hassle to maintain the skis.

I am a member of a small club on the Tees in the north east where luckily we have a good rapport with all water users Rowers, Water skiiers, Canoeists,Dragon boats and the occasional yacht coming into berth in the summer but i suppose that is mainly due to the fact we have a strict timetable we can use the water.

only problems we get are in mid summer and it is the locals using it as a swimming pool. its really not that nice the tees.

Only for them! The colregs explicitly state that they apply to "all vessels upon the high seas " and that the term 'vessels' includes "every description of watercraft".

The court of appeal was ruling as to whether the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 could be used to prosecute the rider of a PWC; The Merchant Shipping Act enforces the colregs in UK law.

In other words what the ruling means is that if you run into a jetski whilst contravening the colregs, then you could be prosecuted (under the merchant shipping act), but if a jetski runs into you, then he can't be.

I think.....

Seeing a jetskier, on purpose, going close to a moored motorboat in order to splash the sunbathers near Calshot last Sunday makes me see why they are getting a bad rep....

Yes, and we had some total 'pr**k' do exactly the same to us while we were on our MOORING on Saturday. With children rowing dinghies and a club dinghy race in progress, their speed thorough the moorings was nothing short of criminal! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

What the hell is the matter with these people? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Are there any sailors who have not had a bad experience with jet-skis?

It seems that IF there are responsible riders(?) they are easily outnumbered by the lunatics who happily ruin a quiet anchorage and the peace of beaches etc. by the incessant and wildly irritating racket!

But is that the price of freedom? We all have a rotten time?

I do find them less annoying than ordinary powerboats. They behave about the same but they do not create a wake that disturbs me.
However I guess that still does not qualify for a "good experience" directly.

I know one way to get the things classified as ships/boats....

A harbourmaster needs to be challenged over making charges for launching "a vessel" or "harbour dues".

If it isn't a vessel how can he make a charge ?

Parked up last weekend opposite SCYC at Abersoch for the afternoon and night, i was actually about 10 metres inside the yellow buoys marking the 4 knot limit. Every jet ski, without fail, that entered the 4 knot zone kept going at full chat until nearly on the beach, finishing their speed run with a flourish, the bye laws also state that the speed limit within 50 metres any vessel is 4 knots. Now 60 or 70 mph within 10 metres of a vessel is fool hardy so why do they do it?
