I am considering buying a bayliner 27' and want to get a feeling for the typical running costs of a boat like this (it is 1990 vintage). Is anyone aware of typical maintenance and fuel consumption figures (I understand this varies with the speed you drive them at)?

Also the type of engine, petrol or diesel! What you need to know is:
1) Marina availabilty and charges
2) Insurance
3) Maintenance
4) Running costs. Petrol/diesel.
There's a stack of data available here, the marina charges, you will have to find by enquiry. Insurance by quotes and the maintenece aspects should be forthcoming from here. Fuel consumption is usually available from the makers or owners club.

We have a similar sized boat all be it with two engines 2x4.3V6's, I guess the Bayliner has just one but probably V8 of 5.7? Marina charge, piece of string, where ya gonna keep it? South coast between £2500 and £4k+ in mid solent. Fuel:- subject to use and distance but don't reckon on less than £30 every time you take it out, 7-10 gallons an hour at a sensible crew friendly pace (20 kts) if going any distance. Insurance:- will be less than your average family type car, £300ish. Maintenance:- Engine and outdrive service (1 engine) £550-600 by dealer or £200 DIY. Antifoul & pre season spruce up £300 (DIY).

If you smoke and drink then give it up your get more out of this! Its hard to give accurate costs cause somthing may go bang, then what?

Welcome to the forum Peter.

We could do with a bit more info on the power plants ie petrol/diesel single/twin but if it's a standard 27 with single 5.7L Mercruiser then an gngine service costs about 25quid and the outdrive another 100quid.

Fuel consumption like you say depends on how you use it but a good average is to work on about 10 GPH for a boat of this size.

Most marinas have web sites which publish their charges based on LOA. The charges vary considerably depending upon location and accessability, for example I have a Bayliner 2556 which is a tad under 30' and I pay just over a grand for Marina mooring but on the south coast it'll be 2,3 even 4 time this much.

Then there are all the other costs like a lift out for the winter and back in in the summer which for a 27 will be about 150 quid each way, again the marina website will have details. It's going to need antifouling every few years, trips to the chandlers when you discover all those things that you absolutely can't do without etc.

Hope this helps

Don't forget the safety equipment, clothing, books, charts, binoculars, instruments, ropes, extra fenders (lots in my case!), spare impellars and drive belts, emergency filters, oil, tools, set of china, pots & pans, sheets blankets, etc etc

Don't wanna put you off but having had a boat for almost a year now, my experience has been that after working out a budget figure from advice received etc., I should then have probably doubled it!

Sorry that engine service should have been 250 quid though I do like the sound of 25 quid better.
