I have seen this question on the main forum, but I am hoping someone here might tell me
it does not cost between £5,000 and £10,000 per year to run a liveaboard, I am hoping
for something about 35 foot, power, mainly in the European canals, and, probably, a look
in the Med. I am capable of all the basic requirements in the upkeep etc. but would
obviously have to pay for moorings, lisences, etc. Thanks, Michael.

Another forum user emailed me his details costs for cruising to the Med. If you would like a copy send me your personal email address using the private message service in user options and I will send a copy. It was really useful to us. I don't have really regular internet access so a reply may take a while.

I don't know. It really depends on the state of maintenance your boat is in and how much money you need to bring her back in shape. After that, it will depend very much on how much you can do yourself.
Mooring fees here on the continent are a fraction of UK ones, especially on inland waterways. This excludes the Med, of course.

good luck

I am happy to share information about our expenses for the 2001/02 season: they are given below. During the year my wife and I lived aboard our 35ft yacht in Croatia for 8 months and returned to the UK for 4 months (1 month in July/Aug, 3 moths in Dec/Jan/Feb) The figures exclude our housing costs whilst in the UK but do include our food and travel costs for the entire year.

Harbour charges are low because we spent most of our time in the season at anchor. Thus, despite the anual permit of just over £100 which is included in the figures below, Croatia is one of the cheapest places to stay in the Med.

What a most impressively detailed list - were you Cost & Works?

My travel pattern is similar but being only one, far lower at about £8300 total for the whole year.

Anchoring is free in all Iberian ports, but pretty difficult to find in the Med - whereas the Atlantic coast I spent about 85% of my time at anchor, only calling in for computer recharge and water.

Michael

I have a friend who has been cruising for 12 years in a 39ft monohull. He reckons over the years it has cost him an average of £7,000 pa. But this is spending virtually no time in a marina, except in emergencies when he has had to leave the boat and fly back home. However, this included one year at £14,700 when a lot of gear failed on the boat, including the gearbox, wind genny and radar.

It all depends on how much you're willing to sacrifice, and where you go.

I guess it might be as comfort to know exactly what it costs and that you have that much in the cruising kitty.... but in my case its always cost all that I had and sometimes a bit more.... and would,nt have it any other way
