running away to sea hits

quick look down the viewing numbers - the escaping posts get an amazing number of hits - are we all dreaming of doing this? I cant tell you how I feel that I am actually going this summer - about b****y time! How many of us REALLY want to run away? Or are we running towards? And what do we run from and to? Me - I'm sick and tired of this treadmill - and it's one I set up for myself, so only one person to blame. And if it all goes pearshaped, well, have a go anyway!

Love is more important to me than sailing. Before I met the man who broke my heart, I had decided to get on other peoples boats because I had this romantic illusion that folks at sea were different and interesting. Unfortunately, I met a man who I then bought a boat for; I had loved him so much. Now I have the boat and no love and the realisation that there are very few people my age actually 'out there', and to tell you the truth, and having travelled extensively already and seen some of the most beautiful places in the world, I really have no idea why I am doing this, continuing with this, and well, this is my 'treadmill'; plodding forth, unable to grasp just why I am doing this. For sure, I do not see it as a dream.
 
Crumbs - it must be me age! Sailing is definitely more important to me than love! Except loving my family and dog, of course. Actually, I dont see it as a dream any more - I enjoy the single mindedness - external problems are put in a cupboard for the duration - and it's r&r from 'real' life. Diving does the same for me. Water in the blood!

Living your life how you want to and not relying on a man is more worthwhile believe me, you are in a very lucky position in your life and one day you will find love. Stop pining for a man and concentrate on the positive things you have achieved in your life, not many young women have travelled the world as you obviously have. I am encoraging my 15 year old daughter to be independent and not rely on any man to make her life complete. She will be travelling with us, therefore gaining far more out of life than being tied down with a man, probably getting pregnant and having a crappy job. Stay positive, you have a wonderful life, you just have to see it that way. Are you still in Japan, maybe coming back to the med and mixing with more English people will help buck you up. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
 
We are definately getting off the treadmill. We have sold our apartment and will be buying a boat outright with the profit, so mortgage free at 48 and 55 respectively. When we go to the caribbean we will be working for ourselves and not lining someone elses pockets, that is certainly something to look forward too. Terry is hoping to semi retire, but as a qualified marine engineer he is forseeing that his expertise will be in great demand. Still better that way than stuggling to make ends meet. I am a great believer in doing what you want and not thinking years down the line, what if. Everybody we know say they envy us for what we are doing but nobody else has the nerve to do it. Not necessarily sailing, we risked everything coming here to Ibiza and it has been the best move we have ever made, and it is enabling us to finally live our dream by buying our own boat and starting a new life. So I would say to anyone out there, go for it, don't end up in some hum drum life regretting what might have been. I know too many people like that. come what may, I really dont want to have big regrets when the pointy finger points at me. So, as I say - have to have a go at all sorts. If they go upended, well, at least you've had a go. Well, maybe one regret - not being slimmer and taller and younger - that's three - and richer - and so on it goes! hahaha
 
I had a similar experiance many years ago, & i'm sure many others here have to. But life goes on I agree totally with what Nomad says forget the past (not easy I know) & look to the future. From reading your posts you have your whole life ahead of you & deserve better. .....good luck.......Nat

I think the word "we" counts a lot. Maybe cod is in an "I" situation. Would you have done it ALONE?
 
Cant speak for others, but I have tried to go to sea with ex-husband and ex-partner (not at the same time!) - both sailors in their own ways. Both times we bought a boat together, but it didnt work. Now I'm going as a single person - alone, but not alone - as crew on someone else's boat. Done this quite a bit, mostly successfully. You get to meet all sorts, but you always take yourself along!!

As Terry is the sailor then no, but as for travelling definately. I have taken a lot of chances in my life, and all of them have been my decision. I wouldn't let any man rule my life, 'we' live our life as joint partners and it certainly works for us. I'm sure there are a lot of men out there that would love to go sailing around the world if their wives would go with them. Terry doesn't have to worry about that, its a joint decision for both of us.
 
Yep, surely is an 'I' problem. If you look back at posts written last year, t'was always a 'we' and always wonderful.
I didn't take love lightly. It was my first time to fall in love, and for a reason, too. Not much out there worth going for.

I'm lucky in that SWMBO is equally as enthusiastic about the idea, and we've been married long enough to know each others foibles, and thus be pretty confident that we'll enjoy it as equals.....

Sounds really corny I know, but I do, as I am sure do many others, see too many people sailing with SWMBO only really there under duress....... they are asking for trouble if they plan a 'great escape' IMHO...
 
As somebody who is about to "Run away to Sea" later this year,and departing on Recce shortly to the "wrong Island" thanks Jeremy..I had some advice given a while ago from someone I met in the Carrib.."If you didn't bring it with you,you wont find it when you get here" End quote...Now I know why I am going! and I will endeavour to take "It" with me.....Jeff
 
I do have one concern tho., I dont have "skill" as such to offer Engineering..IT...Electrics,woodwork etc.,but I can play guitar and sing a bit... Providing I don't frequent the "same" places, too often I may get to play in the odd Bar...But I dont do B Marley covers...OOPS! Hope they like the "Eagles" Etc.,....
 
Done it! Picked up my boat from Wales last July, sailed round to London (mainly single handed) and never went back to the house. So that's sold, I'm obviously not interested in houses! Left full time employment 3 weeks ago (though helping out with a project freelance for them so still in the office stressed but only a few days to go and get the hell out of london). I feel like I've won! Very few possessions apart from guitar, laptop, digi camera & camcorder and the rest is for the boat. Even though I'm still living and working in London I think I'm happier, eating better and spending much less on useless crap. In a few days I'll head down to the Medway or somewhere and start working on the boat for a while. No firm plans but I have charts to the caribbean... Don't think I'm heading to a stress free life by any means but at least the stress will be hopefully more immediate and under my control, not other peoples deadlines.

Like the bloke above, I also have few skills. I'm taking an entire library of Japanese textbooks and tapes with me; maybe I can teach Japanese? Can't sing. Not technically-minded at all. I have [--word removed--] all to offer.
Still, might as well give it a try. If anything, it's fun just to bob around in the bay - even if on my tod. I can also spend ages on the head reading the newspaper with the door open.
 
Well Go for it COD...Least you could teach Japanese! On that point I met a Swede (diver ) he wanted to LEARN Japanese as he had loads of Japanese who wanted to dive! But spoke no English bit difficult when you have to explain the complexities of SCUBA all they kept saying was HAI HAI (To all he said!) so there you go teach the divers Japanese All the best Jeff..... OH bye the way my screen name got mixed up some how it should be En Pleine Mer(Out at Sea) hey ho cant find a way to change it now,,
 
I agree with you there, but when you do find the right man you will wonder why you wasted all your tears on the other one. You have all your life ahead of you, make the most of it. Lynda /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
