This is our anti-fouling weekend, with the boat scheduled to be lifted in on Wednesday. The idea was to put one coat on today and one tomorrow.

However, today's coat used up the entire 5 litre can.

In the past I've used SuperTropic, and five litres of that was plenty for two coats plus extra stripes on leading edges. Since SuperTropic was discontinued, I ordered SeaForce 30 this year (although I think they may have sent me SeaQueen instead) assuming that the same 5 litres would be enough.

Presumably the new stuff goes on thicker? And given that I probably can't get any more tomorrow morning, does the panel think one coat will do? (boat next coming out in January).

i noticed similar last year. i think you are ok as you have the thickness, though i did get 2 cts & a year on only have slime, the top 50m/m is clean as a whistle where the water laps

Same thing happened with us. Usually use 2 x 2.5l cans of Hempel, so I thought 1x5l tin of seaforce 30 would be enough (33' fin keeler). We J U S T managed to finish with one coat (went on thickly) and left a dribble in the bottom of the tin to do the bits under the pads, keel bottom, etc, when lifted. Beautiful finish so I hope it lasts...

Interesting, I intend to change from Hemple to Jotun SQ this year.

Did you use primer over rubbed down Hemple before applying Jotun ?

prv, I think you must have put it on very thickly, which is possible. I have just done my Sun Odyssey 32 with SeaQueen and did two coats from 5 litres and have a bit left for the pad points. I used foam rollers (which do dissolve in it!)
I did thin it about 10% and it was still quite thick and drying very quickly this weekend.
Malcolm at Shepherd Marine points out that these are commercial products designed for airless spray application and can be applied heavily if you choose to do it that way.
So yes I think you'll be OK.
I previously used SeaGuardian and it was excellent.

it should be enough, I got two coats on and over two years we only have a bit of slime. I used Seaqueen its great stuff, I don't come out of the water as I liveaboard.

I don't know specifically about Hemple but Jotun normally recommend a coat of their Vinyguard primer over other a/f.

It may depend upon exactly which Hempel A/F is being over-coated. If that is known then Jotun should be able to advise There may be a compatibility chart available on line.

A barrier coat of a suitable primer is usually recommended when the old A/F is unknown

I find 5L of SF30 does 2 coats on 38ft boat with a bit left over, using short pile roller.

Not sure how you managed that, as there's no way our 5lt tin would have stretched so far without thinning.

We applied it on top of cruising performer with no problems at all.

Maybe next year we will be better at making it go further...

I epoxied the boat winter 2010/11 so nice smooth finish and also working in 20+ degrees so it's maybe thinner but no thinners added.
