run aground video

we reported to them that we had grounded incase passing ships reported it and was told to call every 30 mins. then after a few hours they recommended that a lifeboat would be a good idea to stay on station as we refloated to that we agreed

as it happens it was the right call by them as we couold have got blown onto the sand if our anchor slipped

in the end the they was not needed as an emergancy but was great to know they where there just incase. great people

It was very good of Steve and Heather to allow their story to be told. Unfortunately their visit happened very shortly after I had done my 'survey' of that area and they hadn't seen the chartlet. Mystique's has her own chart correction as a result of this incident - UKHO say 'Less water reported' which is a bit of an understatement; Imray have show drying ground - Mystique's own parking space. It does perhaps show the importance of passing on this information as otherwise the chart would still say 3.7m today.

I had a long chat with the LB Coxn. It was interesting that the crew variously monitor Ch 16 at home/work. The Coxn thought the moment he heard Steve's precautionary call in to the Coastguard that they would probably attend because of the type of vessel and the location. He said that if it had been on the Long Sand Head they would almost certainly have set out before being called just because it's such a bad spot.

We can reflect on the difference of our vessels. TG has a nice long flat keel with the prop well clear of the 'bottom' and well protected. Steve and Heather on the other hand have two expensive sets of props and shafts hanging down. Although they have a small central keel, they can't '***' it into reverse like I would do (like I did once at the Deben) as the props would immediate drag the stern down and do expensive damage to the props and totally disable her. Hence once the tide started to flood M is banging over the sand as she rises putting her props at risk if nothing else. A sobering reminder of the dangers of our waters but good that it hasn't put them off.

Surprised no-one has yet mentioned how great this general 'lack of water' and 'abundance of mud' is. :p:p

In the Orwell ABP have allowed dredging where the spoil from the channel is dumped back into the river. Hence the river is becoming shallower outside of the channel and I have complained to the MMO who are investigating. I capsized a dinghy beside the channel a couple of weeks ago because the centre board snagged the edge of the channel just by the Orwell Bridge.
