Are trailing logs a thing of the past, they dont appear in the marine suppliers,I am looking to have basic stuff aboard but I feel like rumplstiltskin.....is it all electronic now?

Had a look on ebay, they had some deck plates but I couldnot find any other items, but that probably me,not too hot on this stuff,a bit like rip van winkle(Sgeir, thanks for correction)Not that I need it now just pricing up basic lisy of equipment to compare price of two boatsI have in view.

You can still get the VDO log which is driven from an impellor on the outside of the hull via a bowden cable. Furneauv Riddell in Portsmouth certainly has them (I have an old sumlog - which is similar).

Thanks for that ,not too keen on little impellors, plenty of time bound to turn up,probably a good point somuch stuff trailing astern would be one holy mess!!!!

mine does not have an impellor like that on electronic logs, but a proper bit that sticks out from the side/bottom of the boat and trails a propellor behind it. I see that the new sumlogs have a bottom unit like the electronic logs. - at least you can pull those inside the boat and clean them. If mine gets weed, it stays on there until I either go astern and that clears it, or I have to dive down.

These guys used to make a real natty trailing log that was very accurate and had a clip-onto the rail digital display. Don't know if they still do, but worth a try:
