I wonder if there is a rule of thumb for boat weight. It seems to me that each metre in length weighs 1 ton.
Perhaps this only works over a certain length range.

Not even close. The longer you go the more you pile on per metre.

My rule of thumb is that costs are proportional to boat weight, not boat length.

Completely agreed, once you get past the single/twin engine question, costs do seem to vary quite closely with displacement.
