I don't have a rules handbook to hand (oh-ho!) but as I recall from my days as a (very junior) whistler, it used to start with a phrase not unlike "The referee shall be the sole judge of fact." A marvellous get-out to a stroppy player asking about the legitimacy of your birth.
Very strange turn of events - the ref did apologise to the welsh players and coaches though afterwards! (Surprised he made it off the pitch in one piece!)

Wasn't a confused ref something to do with it?
10 seconds remaining? Yes!!
[/ QUOTE ]Don't think the ref was confused...just think that the Welsh were suffering from delusions of their own ability! Thinking they could kick for touch, take a lineout, win it avoiding any infringement and make it past a defense that had given them a hard time for the previous 79 minutes 50 seconds...That is REAL optimism!
Agree with Ken though, it just sounds nice "Italy have beaten Wales"!!

Nonsense - the result reflected the match. And its good for rugby to have an Italian team that is now beginneing to win. Imagine what that will do for rugby in Italy.
We now need to get Romania more involved - the 7 nations?
If we want to stand any chance of taking on the antipodeans the last thing we need is to expand the Six Nations to the 7, 8, 9 etc. nations.
Our internationals play too may games as it is!
It's a shame for Italy that a piece of sheer stupidity by the TMO overshadowed a fine performance which demonstrated that their victory over Scotland was not just a flash in the pan. Wales never looked like winning the match anyway and if they had scored a try in the dying seconds it wouldn't have reflected the run of the game.
Not dis-agreeing with that - just that when you hear the audio there was clearly an error made somewhere and I think the ref was correct to apologise afterwards. He clearly said they had time for a lineout and then ended the game when the ball went into touch - not fair in my book. I agree though that the Italians deserved to win - should boost their confidence enormously - especially after the Scotland win.
I'd vote for a two division thing, say 4+4 with some form of promotion or playoff between the two. So at the moment the top division would be England, France, Ireland and Italy /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Look sunshine, I'm the sole judge so off to the sin bin with you!
Actually just looked it up; the book is called:
Laws of the Game Rugby Union
The overview says:
This compact book tells you everything you need to know about the game of Rugby Union. The book contains all the rules and regulations appplicable before and during a union match and includes extra sessions for U19 and U17 variations of the game, as well as referee signals.
Could someone explain the Rules/Laws to me, please? The ref says that there are 10 secs to go on the clock. Was the clock stopped for the penalty kick to be taken, and if so, when does it start to run again? So Wales boots the ball into touch. Does the clock start again once the line out is taken and play then continue until the next stoppage?
