Hi i am in the process of replacing my rudder bearings but inside the tube there is some kind of lining between the rudder shaft and the grp, its about 3mm thick and crumbles away when touched.
Its not a bearing, could it be some kind of tube lining to prevent fouling of the tube and what do i replace with?

Thanks
Regards

Stick the end of the power washer up the 'ole and if it all comes out it's not meant to be there..... Pretty sure it is a deposit that has been caused by the ingress of water rather than anything the boatbuilder put there!

Where did you get your replacement bearings from? The builder? I'm thinking of changing mine but have not found out how to get them yet...

It well be the remains of the former used when the tube was made, assuming the tube is of GRP. If not, then agree with the others - probably just mud etc.

Actually there may be something in that. Should have thought of it myself. I have before used a length of pvc drainpipe as a former for a rudder tube and laid up over it to form a GRP tube. Something like this may have been done and the original tube left in place and over time become brittle and degraded. Either way it's not doing anything useful now!
