Some thing sencible for a change. My P35's rudders are leaking. Might even mend it my self. If I can find some mug to come down with me for holiday in boat yard.

What sort of bearings or seals does it have. Where do I get them. Do they just bash out or is it difficult. Feel a mug asking the mechanic half way through.

Have they got seals? are they leaking? really? you sure? I would have thought on a tupperware bateux like yours that the rudder tubes would be glassed in to the hull with the tops above the waterline? hence no seals as hole too high and full of rudder stock.

But what do I know?

For sale, 1970 Triumph Spitfire-sold, 1947 Lambretta, 1922 Great grandmother, PM for details.

Only want my oil swapped. Rudders re whatsited oh and a belt or to tightening. It's awfull boring down there on yer own. But on the other hand. There is the Boringdom arms. So is it Tutts and Harry. or Boat and Boringden. Desisions, Desisions. Wonder wot will win.

Oh and by the way. It's my 3,000 Birthday today.

They'll have bearings which also probably act as seals, probably held in place with a grub screw(s).

Count me in as glamorous assistant, watching in amazement as bearings appear as if by magic/forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Why don't you just organise a Wareham/Poole type get together in Portsmouth, and you're then sure to have a captive audience. Just tell them it's a piss up and you'll have plenty of volunteers. Plus you will have the bonus of having started another huge thread. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Can't answer as I don't know exactly what you require, re: bearings & seals. Always willing to lend a hand of course but Portsmouth is a bit far away from me.

Re: Dame Edna Everage!! NM

More likely a phosphur bronze bush than a bearing, but there will almost certainly be a seal in the end of the rudder shaft, I ll give you a hand if you want theres this nice boat yard in the canaries that are offering cheap lift outs ??

Plymouths nice but ......

Our rudder stocks are like a P-bracket and stern-gland combined ie inside the stock is a cutlass bearing that supports and alligns the shaft and on the inboard end there are rings of packing under a stern-gland type follower that you can tighten down. Packing lub'ed by greaser. Treat the whole thing as you would a dripping stern gland EXCEPT there should be no drips at all from rudder stock. If there are, water intake will increase VERY SIGNIFICANTLY when under way in a lumpy sea. Now speaking from (bitter) experience

Once ended up with an "un-comfortable" amount of seawater (2-4inches ) in my aft-cabin due to same during a trip to soutehrn parts of Norway. Got quite a suprise when I entered the aft cabin underway.... Kept crew busy pumping and keeping the water level down for 2 hrs., until we could reach port. Installed lage EL. pump after that as only condition from crew to continue vacation.... but that's another story....

Seals, when rudders removed (when lifted onshore of course) was very simple to replace. Between two brass or stainless rings there was a Wax seal (or should I say, what was left of a wax seal). Best way of describing is that it was some sort of cloth material in strong wax. Cheap to buy and easy to mend, simply cut right length, re-seat rudders, insert first ring, wrap new seal around stock, cut a new one and wrap around stock again, ensuring that joints are in opposite ends, put on top ring and start tightening. Re-commision stearing gear... Check frequently and re-tighten when in water. Check again when underway..... Of course, yours might be different...., but should be relatively easy to re-seal when on land..... (Watch for falling Rudders thoug...)
