I need to drop my rudder but for the life of me cannot get it undone.

Any suggestions (polite) suggestions welcomed ?

What have you tried so far?
Have you put a bit of wood on the top and given it a good belt with a sledge hammer? You might want to support it underneath whatever method you use.
Make sure those marks aren't raised otherwise they might score the bushes and seize it.

It looks as though that collar should unscrew but it'll be pinned. Have you had a realy good look for a pin ?

Tell us what boat, your profile is silent about that, then maybe someone with the same or similar will know the answer.

That collar seems to be threaded internaly and it has wrench marks .A hefty pipe wrench might be the tool to unscrew it but it may destroy it in the process.

It's difficult to tell from the photo, but I don't think that's a threaded collar. It looks to me like the top end of the stock has been machined down, and all you're seeing are machining marks on the shoulder. I presume the damage around the larger diameter part is from your attempts to un-screw it?

Did the tiller head ride on the black collar ? If so, it looks like the whole lot should just drop through the black bearing.

Does the rudder tube come through to the deck, or could there be a collar inside the hull where the tube ends?

Thanks to all who took the trouble to reply... It was a all bit of a drama and after a lot of investigation, talking and advide it became clear that getting the stern tube out was going to take longer than the time we have available.. Once to stern tube was out we then needed to drop the rudder to remove the prop shaft out.. But since its all a bit of a palarvar have decided to put it on hold until next winter
